nuchal translucency scan

I just wanted to check something, if you choose to have the nuchal scan is it instead of the triple blood test?

Also the scan has to be done befoe 13 weeks, which gives me a week and a half. Yet I haven't even had a date through for my 12 week dating scan yet! What if I end up with the nuchal scan before the dating scan? Would that be ok?

Hi love, I had a dating scan at 10w+3days and now I have a nuchal scan on Monday when I will be 13+1. I called up my EPU and explained the situation. Can you chase up your appointment? They can do the test up till 13w+6d, after than they do a blood test only I believe. But you are still entitled to your dating scan. Chase it up hun! X

I will do, thanks! Also do you know what blood screening is? Is it done by a blood test? The nuchal scan people said they do a scan and blood screening.

The screening is a combination of a blood test and an in-depth utrasound. It took her about 25 minutes and we got to watch the bean bounce around while she measured. It was fun! By the way - the blood test was done as soon as the scan was over. They are looking for elevated levels of "alpha feto-proteins?" I think that is it anyway!

Thanks for the info! I bloody hate blood tests! I think I will try and ring the hospital and explain I need my dating scan before I can book nuchal scan. Do you think that would be ok?

Hey,

I know that things can vary depending on location, but I was told to not go for my dating scan on the NHS as I was going for the nuchal scan and it would involve everything that the dating scan would do and more... I was told by going to both I was putting extra strain on the NHS and it was just duplicating work... I had to cancel my dating scan that the midwife had booked,, which would have been yesterday and now have to wait until this monday to have the nuchal scan... Which sucks but thats what I was told...
Im not sure that if they found out that you had booked a nuchal scan they may encourage you to cancel the dating scan... I think that that is essentially what it is, a dating scan,, I dont think they do the blood tests on the NHS until 16 weeks...Again im not 100% sure about the last bit, so please dont take my word of it...

probably just worth checking with your Midwife as she will be aware of the processes in your chosen hospital
