Stop Smoking Specialist Midwife

So I'm ashamed to say I'm still smoking, I've had so much extra non pregnancy related stress to deal with lately but I made the decision that I needed help so I asked to be referred to the stop smoking service.

The midwife came round yesterday, gave me a load of leaflets and said stop when you're ready, we'll make an appointment to come round in a few weeks to set a quit date. I said but I want to quit as soon as possible, she still tried to get me to wait a few weeks and I practically had to beg her to give me a letter to give to the GP to get some NRT.

But the best thing she said was "I still get paid if you stop smoking or you don't so I'm not going to make you" mmm real inspirational then.

She did do a Carbon Monoxide test on me and it gave a reading for the baby too which was very shocking and has made me think the few times I've lit up today.

I wasn't expecting a miracle but a little support and motivation would have been nice.

Is there any way that you could request having another midwife. Doesn't sound like this one is taking her job seriously enough, especially when you are telling her that you want to quit. Telling you to stop when you are ready was pointless. you've obviously would have done that on your own if you could. What you need right now is support, which she apparently isnt willing to provide. At the very least, I would send in a complaint about her.

Yeah I think I'm just going to get the NRT from them and go it alone, all my family and friends are so supportive. Just makes me so mad that these experts can actually put you off!

To be honest, but I'm not sure it's the midwife...for me, all it would have taken is someone performing a carbon monoxide on my unborn baby to get me to but out. The midwife may not have been very supportive but she was probably just being realistic. I'm sure she sees many pregnant women who 'want' to quit smoking, but don't. She's probably a bit jaded.

i would try and stop as soon as you can hun, i know when i had my bloods done at 12weeks in my last pregnancy my midwife asked me if i smoked and i said no but oh does and she could tell i had been inhaling smoke even though i was smoking myself, and if you think about how tiny your babys lungs are!

Maybe try your doctor? he might help you more. i know how hard it is to give up, i just had to stop one day and iv not smoked for over 2years now xx
