What position do you sleep in?

Im finding Im not sleeping properly because im so concious about what is the best sleeping position.. Im not even sure if its relevant this early on in pregnancy.

I love sleeping on my stomach and keep putting a pillow in front of me to stop myself rolling onto my tummy..

Ive even heard that you shouldn't lie on your back and should lie on your left side.. Is this true?? Or is this something we should do when we get a bump??

Be good to know your thoughts on this.

Thanks
Annabel x

I like to sleep on my tummy too and ive heard its ok as long as your comfortable. Ive heard the back is a no no as it can reduce oxygen to your baby. I do generally think sleeping on either sides are ok xxx

I've heard you are to sleep on your left side too.

I don't know about you but I just can't get comfortable no matter how I lie!

you should only avoid sleeping on your back in the second half of pregnancy, as it's the weight of your baby and uterus that puts pressure on important blood vessels, so it's fine to sleep on your back at this stage!

it's also fine to sleep on your right hand side, but i read it's actually beneficial to sleep on your left hand side because it improves blood flow.

as for sleeping on your stomach, as long as it feels comfortable i can't see it being harmful at all - however i can't imagine it being comfortable as your bump grows!!

i've read a lot about sleeping positions since being pregnant, as me and my boyfriend switched sides of the bed so that i could try and train myself to sleep on my left hand side (i always sleep with my back to him) and my sleep has been crap ever since!

My doctor told me to get in the habit early on of sleeping on the left side for the best oxygen flow to the baby, but that is doesn't really matter until around 16 weeks.

Hi, I think in early pregnancy you're probably ok to sleep on your back or tummy. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that after 14 weeks you should not sleep on your back as the baby will put too much pressure on a big vein or something. ( sorry for vagueness). Normally though if you roll on your back you'll feel uncomfortable soon enough and move anyway. As for the belly I think that's just a comfort thing. I always sleep on my left side anyway as I often have a sick stomach and this position helps me...

I agree with Wanta2010baby that it doesn't really matter until after first tri, doctors sometimes recommended doing it in first to tri to get used to sleeping on the left if you prefer right because as pregnancy advances sleeping becomes more difficult anyway so it might be helpful to be used to sleeping on the left but I don't think its too much to worry about

Thanks ladies for all your replies, its all very useful!

looks like I will have to get use to sleeping on my left side by the looks!! Although at least for now I can lie on my tummy and know Im not doing anything harmful to the baby

I was reading up on it too... I prefer sleeping on my right and when I do sleep on my left I wake up on my right or my back :/ I might have to invest in a pregnancy wedge pillow or something.
