High Risk due to BMI and raised blood pressure

Is anyone else in High risk catagory because of BMI?

This is my fourth baby and its made me really worried now. I wasnt exactly thin with my last baby back in 2005 but this time its all changed and you are limited in what you can do in labour as you have to be monitored. Im not bothered about being monitored or anything like that. Its just the way the consultant spoke yesterday after my scan saying about all the risks that could happen. Im scared now to have this baby incase something happens to me.

I have lost a bit of weight since being pregnant about 1 and half stone. But i felt interigated. If i had planned this baby i would of tried to lose weight first. But as it was a very BIG surprise i couldnt lose the weight i wanted to. At the moment i have no appetite due to sickness and things so thats not a problem, and i am going to eat healthy through this preganacy. But i feel so unhappy with the way i was spoke to yesterday.

Hi Hun,

I am not considered high risk, but just wanted to let you know that many women with a BMI that is "less than perfect" go on to have perfect pregnancies, deliveries and babies.

Try not to stress too much and perhaps ask to switch to a different provider as no one should make you feel bad!

Enjoy being pregnant!

I know how you feel, and I'm dreading the consultant 'hmmm' look at me!
I see you're in N.Yorks? Not too far from me! Are u being seen at Hgte? I'm 9wks 2 days and feel rubbish too, third pregnancy, hoping for a few pounds to shift to give me a head start on this weight loss/pregnancy/health battle.
I'll be consultant led too and prob have a planned c-section due to large 2nd baby and probs and section before. Maybe the consultants have to be a bit mardy so that we go away and don't think we can eat for 2! Big hugs, I know it's not nice, just think of lots of nice healthy food to eat when u feel less sick, look forward to baby coming and think about the weight later, it will come off and then you'll feel even more fab! x

I was wondering this morning about my BMI and if I was considered "high risk" I daren't say my weight but it wasn't great at all before I found out I was expecting. When they weighed me I just turned my head and said "I don't even want to know!" and they didn't say anything to me about it, but I know it's definitely got to be over what's considered a healthy BMI.

Like you, I'm just trying my best to eat healthy now and I'm determined not to put much weight on during the pregnancy.

My BMI is 37 and I am dreading this as I know that I too will be considered high risk. The whole 'monitoring in labour' thing is just depressing as I really want to be able to move about freely and help the baby come down naturally when I'm labouring but that seems unlikely by the sounds of it, so will probs end up with c-section in the end or something....it's like its doomed before it's even started

I really don't understand why some doctors try to make us feel so crap - it's not like you can really do much about weight once you're pregnant (and surely you must have got some credit for losing so much weight so early on?!). I'm sure they think we're all just slobs who sit about eating sausage rolls all day and watching endless TV when in actual fact we are probably more conscious than anyone else about our weight and having a healthy baby.

I've decided I'm not taking any shit like this from people during my pregnancy, and if I piss people off I don't care. My wellbeing and self esteem is just as important as the baby's at the end of the day...

Hey, I have got the world's worst BMI and my weight isn't exactly great...... my BMI just before falling pregnant was 33

I am classed as obese (although I don't feel it!)

My GP never made a comment last time I was pregnant and no one has even mentioned my weight this time - they wouldn't dare, I won't put up with healthcare professionals telling me what I already know!!!

Have they said why you have been classed as high risk - explained themselves? It's easy for them to say "because of your BMI" but what exactly do they mean?

Good Luck hun xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I have been wondering about this, I don't know my BMI but know it must be very high as am quite a lot overweight, but I feel healthy and fit and am able to do the same as most other people regardless of my weight.
I haven't seen the midwife or anyone yet, got my booking in appt at the end of march and my 1st scan on 12th April, but when I saw my doctor she never voiced any concerns at all!
Fingers crossed all will be fine, besides, we have enough worries and paranoia during pregnancy without people looking down their noses and belittling us for being bigger!

Thank you so much for all your replies.
Dr said that im high risk due to bmi, its all incase i need an c section i think. But ive never needed one before, all my babies have been born healthy and my last one took two hours from start to finish. She came out fine and i was over weight, my last one no one mentioned about all this new pathway thing. I guess they are just planning ahead just in case the worst happens during labour. But it has made me panic now and im thinking some thing bad will happen. I will be fine. XXX

NICE (the National Institute for Clinical Excellence) produced guidelines this year on BMI in pregnancy. It basically slated all doctors and midwives and said obesity is their fault because they're not telling women who are overweight to follow a healthy diet in pregnancy. (Cos clearly being nagged by your doc will make you feel so inspired to lose weight)
It's a pile of b******s guideline written by doctors that spend all their time in government meetings and never actually seeing patients to try and put yet more hurdles in front of medics who are actually out there working.
Yes being overweight doesn increase the risks of having problems, there's no nice way of skirting around that subject, but you shouldn't be talked down to, and it's still healthier to be overweight but active and eating the right stuff than superskinny but living off cigarettes and coffee.
