I am planning to breastfeed our baby, mainly because i believe IMO, that is the best thing for my baby health wise and it doesn't replace formula. However, if for whatever reason i can't breastfeed i would happily formula feed.

I'll see how it goes. I plan to start breast feeding as I did when I had my son.

Unfortunately with him though I wasn't making enough milk by the time he was 4 weeks old and I started topping up with formula, which really upset me at the time as I felt liked I'd failed him.

After about 2 weeks of this he refused breast milk so he was formula fed from then.

I think people just need to do what suits them best and sometimes remember that even the best plans don't always work out (as I sadly found out) x

This happened to me first time around. I had an old HV who told me off for 'trying to do too much', told me i'd run out of milk and had to supplement. It was definitely the death knoll for breastfeeding. However, I subsequently did a lot of reading and found out that the advice I'd been given was out of date, that due to supply and demand nature of breastfeeding, it was most probably a growth spurt that I could have breastfed constantly through and made more milk and that the first 6 weeks are essential to establish breastfeeding. Next time round, same thing happened but this time rather than panic I fed, and fed, and fed the wee one and my supply increased. This happened almost on cue every 4-6 weeks until she was around 6 months old, is normal and one of the most common reasons for women stopping breastfeeding.
Your situation may have been different, but just thought I would share my own experience.
