1st scan at 16 wks?!!

hi all

i found out i'm expecting for the second time a few weeks ago and when i went to the doctors she informed me i wouldn't get my first scan till 16 weeks! this seems soo long, is this normal?

Hi bumpnumbertwo, i'm on my second and i had my first scan at 12 weeks which i thought was what everyone had regardless of whether its ur first, second, third etc Sounds late to me but im from wales so maybe different areas have different guidelines

In Canada thats normal, you dont receive your first scan until your between 12 - 18 weeks unless they think there might be something wrong. Its a long wait! I just want to make sure theres something in there

Im in uk and my docs are so booked up i wont get my booking appointment till end of april which ill be 14-15 weeks and then scan after...Its so stupid and its ages away

last year when i was pregnant with my 3rd i didnt have a scan until 18 weeks. This time they scanned me early as i fell pregnant while on contraception so they wanted to be sure of my dates so i had a scan at 10wks. My next one isnt until i am 28wks. So i think in different areas there is different waiting lists. I paid for a private one as i was dying to know the sex of baby. Maybe you could do the same if you were worried. But I think the advice is as long as you have no bleeding and no pain you dont need to worry! x

im having my scan at 13 weeks. when i rang the hospital they said it was because they can see a lot more after the 12 week mark. the wait is horrible though isn't it? xx

i dont get my first scan until 20 weeks! and i only get one for the whole pregnancy! my DH is in the air force here and i go to an army hospital. im not sure if this is just something with the military or what. but they wont even authorize me to pay for a private scan either...they cite the reason as "there is no difinitive evidence for how an ultrasound affects an unborn fetus" ugh...what crap! but i cant go to a private provider without my primary care providers authorization. so...im just waiting... :-/

I don't understand this...in order to look at the nuchal translucency which is a prenatal test for Down Syndrome, you have to have an U/S between 11 and 14 weeks. If you're having an U/S at 16 weeks, I assume they're not offering you this prenatal test. I live in Canada, and had an U/S at 7 weeks for dating (everything was perfect, got to see the Bean's strong heart) and will have another at 12 weeks.

i've heard it before, there was a thread about it last november i think in first tri,
parts of scotland only get one at around 20 weeks, and same for certain areas in ireland and wales i think.
haven't a clue about the US.

i think it is far too long to wait for anybody, considering they can pick up abnormalities and syndromes in the 12 weeks scans.

I would most def'n be going for a private scan at 12 weeks to have testing for Down Syndrome, as well as confirmation that all is proceeding as it should.
