Nuchal Translucency Results Abnormal :(

My midwife contacted me this morning and said that the results from my nuchal scan suggested that i have a 1 in 33 chance of having a baby with Down Syndrome.

I am shocked and scared about what this implies. I have been asked to attend the hospital on Monday at 9.30 to 'discuss my options'.

Has anyone else experienced similar?

I don't have any words of advice but did not want to read and run. I imagine you are in shock right now, you need to do your own research and find out all of your options and anymore tests you can have to confirm this. The main question I imagine will be do you want to proceed with the pregnancy. I hope whatever the appointment brings will provide you with some answers.

Hugs

Wendy

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear of your worry. I haven't had the NT scan before - but we are debating having it this time around.

With my last 2 babies after having the triple screen blood test, the results came back with 'high risk' for Down's (1 in 20 for my first baby, at age 22 and 1 in 100 for my second at aged 24).

It's a very worrying time & I really feel for you. By discussing your options I imagine they are going to over you an amnio - which has a 1% chance of misscarriage. I had the amnio in both pregnancies - both of my babies were absolutely fine.

It's such a personal choice as to the route you'll choose, but for me and DH - we had to know.

I'm thinking of you, if you want to know anything else I'll do my best to answer an queries you have, feel free to PM me.

I dont know much about the nuchal scan but my friend had her blood test come back at around 1 in 30ish chance of downs, she choose to have the amnio test and everything came back as normal, she now has a healthy 18 month yr old. Lots of luck xxx

Don't know hun much about the medical stuff/percentages..

All i can say is i have worked with downs kids though and they are the most wonderful loving kids you can imagine. Please bear that in mind and not let society ruin your vision of a beautiful family. People look at me like i'm crazy when i say i'd be happy if i had a downs syndrome child. Good luck whatever you decide x

I agree with Mum22GTTC - they will probably offer you an amnio.

I decided against having the NT scan and tests, as I know that I would not have had an amnio even if my results had come back high-risk. My reasoning for this is that, although it's only a small chance, you risk miscarrying a 'healthy' baby if you have one done. Athough 1 in 33 seems like a big risk, remember that 32 of those babies would be completely 'normal'.

I personally wouldn't want to risk miscarriage; but then again, I wouldn't terminate my pregnancy anyway. If you would go through with a termination should the baby be born with downs, then I'd say have the test. But there are still more reasons not to have it IMO... As a teacher I too work with downs children in mainstream education; I completely agree with what Saywhat says.

However, this is only my opinion. Good luck in whatever you decide hun xxx

I'm sorry you have to go through this hunni. It must be so worrying.

Everyone has given good advice to you. I definitely agree that the very first step would be deciding whether you would keep the baby if it has Down syndrome. Everything else naturally follows from that point.

To help you decide you could maybe look on Google to find some blogs of mums with Ds children. And try to find blogs or forums for ladies who have terminated a baby with a chromosomal issue. I can't remember, but maybe this site has a forum to help?
