Yes, I to had a friend who had been told the same, baby was born fine. Its not a very accurate test, is what I hear. I would only be slightly more concerned about the results if you are advanced maternal age or if it runs in your family, even then it just raises the odds its no guarantee. I get my nuchal scan on Monday, I can't be too much of a hypocrite and say I'm not slightly nervous, but I'll come back to this post and remind myself what I said if they was anything to be concerned about, (knock on wood)! I bet you anything, your baby is healthy, if the odds were say 1 in 5, then maybe you would want to take it seriously...

I am 29 and this is our first child. I have never been pregnant before and from when i found out until now it seems to have been nothing but worry and stress. I had a lot of bleeding at 8 weeks and was sure i had lost the baby only to find everything was fine. Now we have this worry.

I was so happy after the scan the sonographer said everything looked absolutely fine and the back of neck measurement was normal. The baby was very wriggly so she did find it hard to scan me but still reported everything was ok. The baby's heartbeat was within the normal range although the upper end of normal.

It was the blood test that has come back abnormal i think. I am not sure whether to have the amnio but we do want to know. The midwife on the phone this morning said that between 18 and 20 weeks a sonographer can tell if a baby has downs. I am nearly 15 weeks and by the time i have had the amnio and got the results i will probably be 18 weeks. The midwife suggested i had my 20 week scan moved forward instead of the invasive amnio. So we will think about that. Its definately a worrying time.

I was due to go to the theatre tonight to see the ballet. I was so excited but i don't really feel like it now. I will go anyway as it might take my mind of the worry.

Yes definately go out this evening, try to keep busy and stay positive!

Obviously the amnio is invasive & there is a risk with it so I'm not telling/encouraging you to have it - that's a very personal choice. But just wanted to let you know that you can pay to have the results came back within a few days - cannot remember the cost (somewhere between £30-£60 I think) so you do not have to wait the 3 weeks. I know that I could not have handled that 3 week wait.

Good luck, I'm sure everything will be absolutely fine

All i can say is i have worked with downs kids though and they are the most wonderful loving kids you can imagine. Please bear that in mind and not let society ruin your vision of a beautiful family. People look at me like i'm crazy when i say i'd be happy if i had a downs syndrome child. Good luck whatever you decide x
i wanted to say something similar after having a cousin with down's syndrome. i understand this must be such a frightening time for you, but it may be comforting to read about down's syndrome and arm yourself with lots of information. most people with the syndrome live long and happy lives, some to 70+ years. it need not neccessarily be looked at as devastating news. good luck sweetie and i hope that you and your baby are healthy, but if the news is that it has down's, try and remain positive. sending you lots of luck and love xx

Im Hoping:
Have you been over to the "Gestational Complications" section here on B and B, I just popped over there and noticed two threads on the first page regarding this very subject. I think you will find peace of mind reading some of those posts, perhaps you could PM the ladies who started the threads for some support and reassurance. I have faith you and bubs are going to be just fine. Go out tonight and try to enjoy yourself! : )

Amnio results should not take weeks to come through. Also, the risk of m/c is even lower than 1% if an experienced doctor performs the test, so if you do decide to have the test it'd be worth asking about who performs it and the hospital's individual stats on m/c (my local hospital for example reports that it has a virtually zero rate of m/c for this test).

Has anyone else experienced similar?

Were you given the combination test -NT scan and blood test which gives a more accurate result??
I'm afriad I don't have any advice, but my thoughts are with you at this worrying time. xx

Hi,
I just posted a similar thread...
I am a first time mum-to-be at 35 and had a nuchal screen last night, which showed an NF of 4.5mm. We are now worried sick about what this could mean and have to wait a week for the blood results which I have been told will be high risk given the scan result.
We have decided to have a CVS as the next step but I am still told that there could be heart defects and other abnormalities - has anyone else gone through similar - is there a happy ending out there?
At the moment we are both very emotional and don't know what to do for the best.....
I have read a few other forums and saw that people with abnormal result have gone on the have perfectly healthy babies so lets stay positive
Maisey xxx

For us finding out our baby has Downs Syndrome, would not result in us terminating the pregnancy. For that reason we would not have the amnio, risking our baby. If you feel that you need to know ahead of time, I would go for the amnio as that is the only difinitive test prior to the baby being born.

Some people who feel that they would keep the pregnancy whatever the test results still have an amnio because they would prefer to know in advance to be able to plan etc.
