Genetic screening questions

Hi,

So we went on Monday and our bean is 9 weeks, 5 days. They offered us a lot of information on genetic screening that they now offer to everyone and I was wondering what anyone's opinion is. It is non-invasive - blood work and ultrasound - but I am a MASSIVE worry wart so I know if they said there was even the possibility of a problem I would cry and worry away my whole pregnancy. They said there is a fairly high rate of false positives and then the next step would be a CV which carries the risk of miscarriage. Also - we have seen our bean moving and swimming around so are not going to terminate at this point.

I am 25 and we have no relatives with any health issues nor does my partner - all that being said - would you opt for the testing? They said our baby looks perfect thus far...what do you think?

I think if you are 100% sure you wouldn't terminate even if there was a problem, then I don't think there's much to be gained in knowing, apart from the fact that it might help you be a little bit more prepared in the (very very unlikely) event that there was a problem

For whatever reason we weren't offered certain screening tests last time and the 20 week scan failed to pick up Daisy's spina bifida.

That said, I am very relieved that it didn't as I don't believe we'd have continued with the pregnancy had we known - which is crazy when you consider we have a beautiful daughter who currently has hardly any issues at all i.e. she's going to walk and doesn't seem to have been affected developmentally etc.

Neither of us have any genetic problems on either side of the family so it was put down to just one of those things that happens.

It's a very personal decision, others I know were happy to be able to prepare but, it's entirely up to you. It will be the right choice whatever you decide.

It is worth mentioning that our odds were crazy; what happened to us was very, very rare.

I declined the test. I'm 30. Since termination isn't in my realm of possibilities I decided there was no reason to put myself through a potential false positive. Also, apparently they can "see" if there is an issue during your 20week ultrasound so you can at least have some time to prepare.
