NT scan advice

Does anyone know what the procedeure is for obtaining an NT scan? During my appointment yesterday the midwife told me that the hospital I am attending doesn't offer them routinely and if I wanted one it would have to be done privately.

Is this standard practice? I will be 35 when I give birth and I had kind of assumed that they would offer one. I have been offered the quadruple test in a few weeks but don't know what to do now. Do I have the quadruple and pay for a private NT or is there nothing to be gained from having both?

Very confusing!

Can I just ask how much the private scans are?

Well I spoke to Bupa this morning and they have said that it's £120 for the scan or £230 for the combined scan and blood test.

After doing a bit of research however, I think that this seems fairly expensive. There are a number of private clinics that do the combined scan/bloods for about £180.

I have read that the sucess of the scan is largely dependent on the competence of the sonographer so I'm not sure if it's a case of 'You get what you pay for' or whether its a money making racket that playson the concerns we all have!

I paid £190 for the scan and blood tests. Personally I think its well worth it. I'll be 34 when I give birth.

This link is good - its got a phone number to find a screening centre near you.

I get the triple test at my hospital. Depends what the NT results are (I get them tomorrow) as to if I bother. TBH if the NT risk comes back low I'd be more inclined to just go with that.

Hi Frenchy. Just to let you know I got my results back this morning and spoke to my midwife about if I should still have the triple test. She said there's no point as the NT testing is much more thorough and advanced and it wouldnt be as accurate a result. So in short if you do opt for the NT you done need any further screening as long as you are happy with the results!!!

Hi Frenchy

I am 35 and not sure if I would qualify in my area or not, but the 1st appt I could get with my midwife wasn't until May 2 when I will be over 13 weeks anyway!!

I decided to go for a private NT scan & blood test because I saw on the internet that the accuracy rate is supposed to be better because of doing it all on the same day, you also get the results on the day too. I'm paying £190 for both.
