The more u drink the clearer the scan will be! Drink as much as u can hold without being in pain or desperately needing the loo! The bladder pushes the uterus up and u can see more and it's clearer! Good luck for ur scan xxxxxx

Ideally you should have a full bladder, it makes it easier for them to see baby.

What I've heard is that slim people can often get away with it not being so full, but ladies of a larger size need bladder pushed forward more as they have to see past the flab too! Don't know how accurate that is.

Anyway, if your bladder is too full they will tell you to have a wee before they carry on. You can get it out more quickly than get more in. And if you don't drink enough and they can't see, that's when the dreaded internal scan might happen.

There is normally a loo very near by - at my local hospital there is one either side of the scan room!

Hi, I just had a private scan at 6wks 5days and he told me to empty my bladder!! He said that it is only certain NHS trusts that ask for your bladder to be full so as their job is made easier as everything in their opinion is made clearer but he said he has been scanning pregnant women for many years and doesn't find it necessary and right enough everything was seen as clear as day. I remember having to go for my first scan at the hospital in my last pregnancy and almost wetting myself as my bladder was too full. I found it a really uncomfortable experience but then for my 20 week scan they said not to bother having a full bladder. I think it just seems to depend where you are in the country as different nhs trusts have different rules for these things xxxx
