There is lots and lots of scientific evidence to prove smoking does damage your baby. You may well have turned out fine but many dont. My Mum smoked with me and I had a low birth weight, which is just one of the known problems.
I quit the day I found out I was pregnant with my first - its your choice to smoke but your unborn baby doesnt get a choice.
Its not easy to stop but your midwife can get you help. You should at least try to - I read a good book called Alan Carrs Easy Way to Stop Smoking. My mum read it and quit with no other help after smoking 20 a day for 33 yrs. It can be done - you just need to want to and what better motivation!!!
I know you're not far along now so you wont look pregnant, but IMO there is nothing worse to see than a woman with a beautiful bump and a fag in her hand....

Good luck!!

My mum smoked with both me and my sister but she did cut back alot and we were both fine. What I've heard most commonly suggested is to cut back as much as you can until you don't smoke at all and even if you can't quit all together, cutting back really does help both you and your baby. I think I remember another thread about smoking, here:

Any of you smoke

It really is SO hard to quit, and alot of people can manage easily but others can't. So don't beat yourself up if you find it difficult. Just try to cut back as much as you can until you can quit.

That's also the book I read to quit smoking, and my it has helped my friends out aswell. I highly suggest reading this book. And YES cigarettes can harm your baby, one cigarette contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including butane (lighter fluid), Arsenic (rat poison), and Hydrogen Cyanide (if you took the amount of hydrogen cyanide that there is in one cigarette alone without anything else, it would instantly kill you + poison your blood stream). Not to mention all the cancer cells in smokes. I smoked until I was about 3 months pregnant and quit after finishing the book.
Also smoking cigarettes while pregnant has been directly related to SIDS, stillbirth and miscarriage. I understand it's really really hard to quit smoking, but good luck quitting hopefully you will find it easy, if not I highly recommend reading that book or another one, maybe even hypno-therapy or the patch? Either way I wish you luck.

I quit the day i found out i was pregnant and have only had a sly puff of someone elses fag since.

I know its mega hard hunni, but youve just gotta go for it, cut right right down and in no time you'll have given up completely

I quit when I found out I was pregnant this time. It was hard for a couple of weeks but its fine now, doesn't occur to me to smoke. I think it would add to the stress if I carried on, worrying after each fag that it might cause a miscarriage. I am double paranoid though after a m/c in sept. Smoking is really harmful for the baby, each cigarette fills the baby with chemicals and starves it of oxygen so it doesn't grow properly. It really does increase the risk of miscarriage and low birth weight babies who are more prone to cot death. If you quit now its the best thing and its still very early on, good luck!!
