I smoked for 20 years and stopped cold turkey for 6 years and started up again 1.5 years before I found out I was pregnant. I watched my beloved stepmom gasp her last breath due to lung cancer, but caved in and returned to smoking when things in life because stressful.

However, as soon as I knew I was pregnant I gave it up. I got in my car right outside the doctor's office when my pregnancy was confirmed and smoked my last one in November. I put it in my mind that it is not worth it, expensive and did not want to harm my baby. I still get the occasional craving especially for the flavoured cigarettes, but I know it is more psychological now than physical. And with the baby around it will be my incentive not to return to smoking.

I say do your best to give up and maybe ask for smoking cessation help from your GP or midwife. You will save a load of money you can put towards the baby and both of you will be healthier in the long run. Good luck.

Its not easy to stop but your midwife can get you help. You should at least try to - I read a good book called Alan Carrs Easy Way to Stop Smoking. My mum read it and quit with no other help after smoking 20 a day for 33 yrs. It can be done - you just need to want to and what better motivation!!!
I know you're not far along now so you wont look pregnant, but IMO there is nothing worse to see than a woman with a beautiful bump and a fag in her hand....

Good luck!!

I could agree more. I have never smoked and never will. But i could never imagine putting that stuff inside me and playing with my babies health.

I was also born only 6pounds and put straight into scabu as i had breathing probs (my mum smoked, only very little but still did while pregnant with me)

The pregnant woman with a fag in her hand thing, makes my blood boil!!!! Very selfish

Come on......if you can't give up smoking for a baby then when can you??

Of course it harms that baby, which is why every health care professional in the land will tell you not to do it!!!

How are you going to feel if baby is born with problems???

I gave up smoking and yes it's difficult, but hey, that's life!!

Give it a try!

Read the book the girls are mentioning and think that everytime you light up, you could harm the baby!

Good luck!

I am, but i am trying to quit.
My mum smoked through all 5 of her pregnancy's and weve all turned out fine.
But it's worrying. Does it really harm the baby, or is it just what they say?
I don't kno? Lol.
donna, I have smoked since i was about 13 (started off trying to look cool haha) im now nearly 21 and finding it really difficult to stop. I went to see the midwife and she recommended me to stop. i decided that i would try my best for the babies sake and since then I havn't had one full ciggy. I admit i have the occasional couple of drags of my mates cigs. It got to he point a couple of days ago that i couldn't stand the smell of them. I had a few drags this morning of my friends and it was lovely. it felt like it did when I was younger, and it made me want a full one but i just walked away and made myself busy.
As long as the people around you support you ad try not to smoke infront of you it makes it so much easier, so turn your home into a no smoking place, that way even if you want a few cheeky puffs you will hae to venture outside in the cold. it soon puts a dampner on things when you come back in dripping wet from the lovely english weather.
Good luck
xxx

i have smoked for 20 years and have smoked over 20 a day for the past 15 and I am ashamed to say I havent managed to stop but i think there is no excusing it. We all now that smoking is not good. I have moved on to the lowest light cigs and am down to 2-3 a day but i dont seem to be able to cut the last ones out. it doesnt help that hubby smokes either! I dont beat myself up about it though....I take each day as it comes.

Be gentle on yourself but stay determined and you will get there!!!
Good Luck!!!

I smoked for my entire pregnancy with my first child and I HATE myself for it. Although he was a normal weight, he has always been smaller than other children his age. I was a stupid young teenager then and if I could go back now, I would've quit the moment I found out I was with child. Becoming a parent is all about sacrifice. It's not about you anymore! I have been a non-smoker for almost 7 years now. If I were you, I would throw out every single lighter, ashtray, pack of matches and pack of smokes you own. Do it for your kid!

If smoking can cause a horrific death in adults, what can it do to a developing baby?

I used to smoke, a lot but gave up ages ago. I get really strong cravings atm for a cigarette but there is no way in hell I would ever deprive my baby of oxygen so I can get a quick fix. You are literally suffocating your child.

As Mervsmum and mBLACK have said, read Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It helped me to give up, definitely worth a try.

You will feel so much better when you stop as you are completely free from the slavery of needing cigarettes. Have a look on ebay, there are loads of copies for just a couple of quid.

Good luck with it. x
