Safe or not

I just recently found out I'm pregnant with #4 and wanted to know if anybody else goes to a gym? Just wondered if it's safe, I've heard if you have been doing stuff like that before it's fine but I haven't. I just signed up with my best friend about a week ago and I have a 1 yr contract with the gym. I would like to keep going and only do very light and mild things while there but I wanted to know if it's safe. I just got my pregnancy confirmed by my family doctor friday so I haven't seen a ob/gyn yet. Just hoping to get a few opinions on here.

Hiii

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I was not a huge exerciser prior to finding out I was pregnant and when I confided in my doctor about exercising he suggested that doing things that wouldn't overwork me, like walking on a treadmill or doing a stationary bike at a low speed would probably be the best things to do. Obviously lifting things is out of the question but doing things like the bike or elliptical would be fine as long as you're feeling okay and not overworked. Again this is just what my doctor advised me, so it could be different for everyone. But I would take advantage of that gym membership while you have time to. Maybe call up your doctor and get his advice first and make sure that he believes you're at a good stage and what he thinks would be best for you to do at the gym!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy!

I totally understand your worries, I had exactly the same questions when I found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago, so I asked around and also did a bit of internet research.

As far as I can work out, it's perfectly safe to do gentle exercise, as long as you don't put your body under too much strain. So for example, I think it would be safe going on the treadmill for 20 min walk or a gentle jog, or even on the bike or the cross trainer, but I would avoid the weights, rowing machine etc. Doctors actually advise pregnant woman to do regular exercise, and I think walking and swimming are both supposed to be the best forms.

If in doubt I'd speak to your mw or even someone at your gym - they should be trained in dealing with questions like this.

Good luck!

Hi Hun I go to the gym 3/4 times a week but now just take it easier than I did - I had started running as I was going to do the race for life but now I think I will just be walking it as I will be about 5/6 months pregnant lol

if you just take it easy everything will be ok and if you have a pool at your gym that is meant to be great when your pregnant.

Congrats Hun xx
