personally i think your son will learn far more from the experience. as long as he has you and your husband as certainties in his life, travelling around is only going to enrich him and give him life experience. I would LOVE to be able to go travelling for 6 months with my son! good luck and have fun

Keeping the family together, to me, would definitely be the most important thing. I think it's good for kids to have experiences like that.

Everyone likes to give their opinions and think that their parenting is best. In reality, all our lives are different, and each person has their own personal beliefs about certain issues. Obviously, your best mate feels "that home is everything and that even just flying the kids out for a few weeks is wrong!" That is her personal opinion and that is great if she believes that. It has nothing to do with you. Like you have said, you have travelled before and you believe that your son has benefited from it in the past. You have to make a decision that is right for your family. You can't live you life to please your friends. I would thank her for her opinion and let her know that you value it, but at the same time...this is something you should only be discussing with your OH.
