Absoutley. Its hard but its a great motivation! Had a last cigarette the day I found out I was expecting my first and then that was it. I found it easy when I thought about it - it was my choice to smoke but I'm forcing it on my child, its not their choice at all.

Oh and think of all the money she can stash away that she would have set fire too!!! You will be able to have the best pram going!!

Smoking can increase the likelyhood of SIDS as well. You should buy the book "What to expect when you're expecting". I bought it last night and it tells you EVERYTHING you could possibly ever want to know.

Definitely a good idea to give up the smoking - it's just bad and unlike the alcohol issue there is buckets of evidence to prove it.

With regards to going to the doctor about the pregnancy, it is not essential in the UK. I assume the urine test was positive, you didn't actually say, in which case you can self-refer to a midwife. This is your right under the national framework for antenatal care. To do this you can either call your GP surgery and ask to book with a community midwife or get in contact with the head of midwifery services at your local maternity hospital who should be able to make the appointment. This can be tricky and they may tell you that you can't but insist, it is your right. Fortunately i have done some work in this area so know how the system works. Bear in mind though that if there are any complications, they will want to refer you for an obstetrician opinion and also her GP will be informed of the pregnancy/delivery and she'll have to deal with him/her after the birth so it may be wise to go through them. I would ask her why she doesn't want to see the doctor - is there some previous issue there?

With regards to advice try the 'Bloke's Guide to Pregnancy' quite informative and funny! Feel free to pm me - not saying I'm an expert but i'll give it a shot!
