Downs Syndrome test

Hi

I was just wondering who was having the blood test for down syndrome and who isnt bothering.
I have been offered it in 3 weeks even tho my chances are 1 in 1206. Im thinking either way i would be keeping my baby and i tempted to not have the test. is this irresponsible?
Any thoughts on this?
Ta Gems xx

I think everyone is different and it is your choice not to. Personally I am going to have the test done only because my friend recently had a downs syndrome baby and she went through so much and it died the baby did not even have a chance, but there was a chance she could have been fine but I think I want to know so I am prepared for what could possibly happen. Although I know you cannot really be prepared for something like that happening it would be so awful(the baby dying I mean).

We've decided to go for the test. At my hospital, if you come back as high risk, they give you a very detailed 20 week structural scan with a consultant who can pick up any problems. The reason we decided to have this done is so that we know beforehand if there are anythings we can do to help the baby get better before it's born. My SILs SIL had this done, and she discovered the baby had a very unusual heart defect, and she'll have to have a ceasarian so that there's no strain on the baby in labour. I think this made our minds up for us. Although, like you, we will go ahead with the pregnancy whatever the results.

Good luck making a decision

I didn't even have the triple test because I knew if it came back that the chance was high I wouldn't have been able to have the amnio. If you don't want to have it then don't. I think it's a bad idea. If you're going to keep your baby no matter what, and those odds aren't too shabby anyway, then don't have it if you don't want it.

DH and I have decided not to have the test done, we will love baby no matter what. I can understand why people who do have it done, I can also understand why people abort the pregnancy if there is something wrong. It is a very hard thing to deal with and some people just dont feel emotionally or physically stable enough to cope with some thing so big

I'm not having the tests done. Like others have said it won't make any difference to me or my husband. The midwife was a little pushy to have them, which i didn't like.

i didnt do the triple test for the reason you were saying, i couldnt have aborted. at my 20 wk scan they found a golfball on my babies heart, this could be a marker for downs and because of this they up your chances. so after genetic counseling they told me that i dont medically need to have an amnio because my chances still are not that high but if i do one then i need to wait a little, because it can cause premature delivery. we opted not to do one. no need to even risk giving birth early in my opinion. i will say this- if i had done the triple test they could have given me a more accurate estimation of my risk after finding the golfball. so they had to give me the worst statistic on the spectrum - which like i said still wasn't bad enough to warrant an amnio. you are not a bad person if you do the test, and you are not irresponsible if you dont.

I'm having the test done but it's my personal choice.
I am going to keep it no matter what but if there is something wrong I want time to prepare for it,learn about it and prepare myself.

It's your decision...
