Did anyone choose not to have the Nuchal Scan?

Hi girls, just wondering if anyone didn't have this scan?
There is nowhere in my town that does it, and I have to travel to another town to have the scan. I have friends who didn't have the scan with any of their children. I just don't know what I should do. I was thinking of just asking for a regular 12 week scan, instead of having this special tests?

Opinions please lovelies

Well hun this scan wasn't about when I had my boys, we just had a normal 12wk scan.
To completely honest, hubby and I weren't going to have the scan done, I personally think it can bring undue stress and worry on expecting mothers and the scan price is just stupid ($320 for me). What made us go for it, was the chance to see the babies in 3D, we have never had a 3D scan before so we thought cool why not. We are taking the Kids with us and it gives them a chance to REALLY see things and have them involved.

With our first we chose not to have it as whatever the result we would have continued the pregnancy if possible.

This time the 12 week scan is a Nuchal Scan which is provided for free so we have it automatically unless we specifically opt out at the start of the scan.

The only way to know what is best for you is to know what you would do if they gave you the various risks as a result, if they say high risk would you have an amnio or would you go on anyway, if you would carry on regardless then to me there is no point having the nuchal scan as it would just make you worry rather than enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

These days the sonographers are so good that even if you dont have it they will pick up on most problems if there are any.

Talk to your midwife and explain your thoughts to here and she will be able to advise what are your best routes.

For what it is worth when we had our first and had the normal scan we were actually told there was next to no fluid on the back of the neck so we would be low risk, many of our friends who have since given birth have reported the same of the scan so maybe they have a quicky look anyway?

I think it's very much a personal decision. Personally, I will have all free tests offered to me so I am as informed as possible.

I won't be having it. Like you we have to pay privately. The nuchal fold was measured at my 12wks scan and the consultant said it looked perfect but to have a proper idea i'd have to pay for private bloods. I'm just going to wait for my 15wks screening i'm happy knowing that all looked well at the normal 12wk scan xx

I think it is a very personal decision but I decided not to have it.

My reasons were, I am quite young and low risk anyway, if the scan showed an increased risk, this still does not mean it would have it and then I would have to decide whether to have an amnio which has a risk of miscarriage. I decided that even if the tests showed it was likely something was wrong we would continue anyway and so decided not to have the test as to not to cause undue worry.

However, as I said before, it is a very personal decision.
