Coldsores

Hi, I am about to come up in a cold sore, I can feel it coming. Is it safe to use Zovirax?? Anyone else had coldsores during pregnancy?

it is recommended it is not used in pregnancy apparently there had been a number of links with deformities in babies, i used a tiny amount when i was pregnant as didnt think twice then on this site by chance someone mentioned cold sores and warning not to use zovirax!

I checked on the website and although there has been reported links to it there is no proof it does cause it! But better to be safe than sorry i never used it again and thankfully my wee one is ok x

I get them horrible and through out my last pregnancy I used over the counter stuff like blistex and carmex even though they don't make them go away any faster it helps with the pain.

Apparently licquorice lip balm is amazing for treating coldsores and even better at preventing them. Apparently if you use it every day it keeps coldsores at bay. Alot of people swear by it, check it out online, it's a natural remedy! X

Well, my prediction was correct, I now have a massive coldsore on my lip. Its not very attractive I can tell you. I decided not to use any medication as I was hearing conflicting views from everyone, including a pharmacist! It doesn't hurt but also doesn't make me wanna leave the house either!! I hate coldsores, I haven't had one for years. I can only imagine I have this one because I am pregnant??!! I think I read somewhere that your immune system is lower at the beginning of your pregnancy?

I used to get cold sores through my teens...and after a whole lot of stuff that never worked, I used my own home remedy of putting isopropyl/rubbing alcohol on it a couple times a day with a Qtip. I found it worked really well when you used it right when you felt that tingle coming on but it should work on a full out one too, just might take longer. I think keeping it moist with ointments is the worse thing you can do.

And it's ok during pregnancy to do this from what I read, because you're using a very small amount so there isn't much absorption.

It worked for me, I eventually just stopped getting them...hope it works for you!
