Why is the Swine Flu Vaccine safe?

Sorry if I am posting about the same topic again....

I have read that some vaccination while pregnant is not safe... e.g. the rubella vaccine should not be takes while pregnant.... Specifically "A number of vaccines, especially live-virus vaccines, should not be give to pregnant women because they may be harmful to the baby." (
http://my.clevelandclinic.org/health...Pregnancy.aspx)

So, do we know if the vaccine contains live-virus, or killed virus? Would it be better if we get the vaccine when we are in the 2nd trimester???

Any thought?

im not sure why its safe i was just told it is, its apparantly like the normal flu vacine given every year with another "ingredient" and pg women have been getting the normal flu one for years, i was strongly recommended by my gp, midwife and nurse at epu to get it and my bubs is going strong, i had it at about 9 weeks, its a totally individual choice though, i weighed up the risks of actually catching swine flu which with working in a kids nursery was quite high so thats what swayed me to get it x

Before I went for mine (just before 20 weeks I think) I asked this and was told for this vaccine, they kill the swine flu virus then inject it so your body gets the dead virus and knows how to kill it in future if you come into cotact with it.Hope that made sense? It is not a live vaccine.

I've heard the nebulized version (up the nose) is not approved for pregnancy though the shot is. According to the CDC the nasal version is live but the shot version is killed.
There is a FAQ on the CDC website. http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/pregnancy/ as well as other information.
I thought about it and as I have been having bad shortness of breath my entire pregnancy I will be planning on getting it, despite never getting any seasonal vaccines, nor being prone to regular flu. However, it won't be available here until March and I'll be in my 3rd trimester by then.

I aked my doctor this when I found out at 4 weeks, she said that if it was her she would def have it but would wait until 2nd tri. I thinks I'll take her sdvice on that one. I don't think she meant it was particularly bad to have it early, just wait if possible x

Thanks for the input. The vaccine is available now in my area, but I'll probably wait till 2nd tri to get it...

I had it 4 days after conceiving (as I now know!) because I get severe asthma so would really be at risk. It is not a live vaccine (well, UK anyway) and the nurse assured me it was no different to having the seasonal flu vaccine. I guess you have to weigh up the risk to you personally if you caught the flu - particularly if you have any other condition that would put you at higher risk. I don't think there is any right or wrong decision tbh.

by the time you ladies are in 2nd tri flu season and swine flu season will be over. We;ve already gotten past the outbreak.

I dont normally like taking the vaccines. However if you get the flu or the swine flu you put yourself and your baby at serious risk.

Its recommended to get it here very strongly. The sooner, the better. I lucked out and got it before I was even pregnant because I work in a hospital.
