I haven't been taking it either for the first 8 weeks...it's not neccesery. My doctor however proscribed it to me.

You should probably balance your diet, but again I have been barely eating for a few weeks now...

Have you visited your doctor yet?

folic acid is essential, i started taking mine at 6 weeks so really you should start taking it as soon as possible.
i take mine when i think about it now but they advise to take it all the way through the pregnancy but its best taken until 12 - 13 weeks as it may prevent spina bifida and downs syndrome.

It is essential. Reduces chances of neural tube defects. Can easily buy it from a chemists, do not have to see GP/

i thought it can only be effective if taken from conception or could taking it at 7-8 weeks still reduce a risk?

All the guidelines say you should start it from TTC, but whatever stage in the first 13 weeks will have some benefits.
I have been using a pro-natal vitamin supplement by Sanatogen, that contains all the folic acid you need, plus all the other essential vitamins and minerals you need. This may be of benefit to you if your diet isn't great.
One thing though, it def gives me painfull wind and slowed my bowels down (sorry to be so descriptive). I have worked out that it is these that cause it as it always starts 4 hrs after I have taken them, but it is a small price to pay!!

i only started to take it from 5 weeks and was worried too. But spoke to the doctor who reassured me. She said start taking it as soon as and many women never take it because they dont know they're pregnant til fater 12 weeks.
