However I would like to be prepared in advance to know if there's a higher chance of our kiddo having the syndrome (though I know the tests are really just an educated guess).

We don't have the option of not getting the amnio done over here. There are 2 seperate tests they do through blood..one between 11-13 weeks and the other is between 18-22 weeks or something like that...if the tests come back positive the doctor told me I have to have the amnio regardless. The thought of it scares me, so I'm hoping the tests are negative.
Really? Wow! I'm afraid that I have no idea about other countries apart from NL, so sorry for the misinformation. (I just discussed it with my midwife today so am sure that it's correct for here though.) It does seem odd though -- I mean, they can't *catch* you and hold you down to give the amnio, right? So how do they plan to force you?

I'm not being flip, honestly, I just think it's really rough that committing to one means potentially committing yourself to a (very slightly) risky procedure.

I'm not even going to have the bloods done as I suspect they will come back as high risk any way because of my age (37) and don't want to spend the rest of my pregnancy with that hanging over me. I wouldn't terminate the pregnancy if it was DS so wouldn't want to take the risk of an amnio to find out. It's a very personal decision though.

Hi I had they NT scan and I wished I hadn't had it done. I was 27 when I had the scan done. All the test came back normal except one the nasal bone wasn't present, which is an indication for Ds. I really wasn't happy with the way the sonographer did the test and how he went about telling me the findings.
Me and my OH have decided to have a private scan at 16w 4d and we are hopping and crossing everything the nasal bone will be present. If not OH wants to have the Amino test, so I'm really hoping it will be showing.
At the end of the day it is your decision and I'm sure you will make the right one. Good luck and I wish you all the best.

I've got mine on Monday. They don't tell us when we are there but by phone within 2 days I think. It's going to be great if it's all hunkydory but I can imagine your whole world is flipped upside down if things aren't positive....x
