Unhappy

Alcohol in pregnancy

I'm really worried, as I'm 11
weeks pregnant and just found out. However I drank daily heavily for the
first 4 weeks (over Xmas), and then I didn't drink hardly at all for
the next 4 weeks (in order to 'detox), and then I drank heavily (daily)
for the last three weeks, until I found out. Now I'm really worried my
baby will have FAS - in fact I'm now convinced it will. Do you think it
will, or what are the chances of it occuring amongst heavy drinking
pregnant women? My scan is in 2 weeks - do you think they'll be able to
tell me whether it does have FAS? I'm really worried now, and although
I've now stopped, I'm worried it's too late.  Please help.

I wouldnt worry at all for the first 12wks the baby feeds from the amniotic sack, only from 12wks onwards the placenta takes over and the baby gets what you eat/drink. So really try not to worry hun, have a chat with your MW at the first appointment im sure she will put your mind at ease.

I wouldn't worry too much about it but like Whisper said, mention it to your MW at your first appointment

This happens to a lot of women. They don't realise they're pregnant for a long time and carry on drinking as normal etc. Most babies don't have Fetal Alcohol Sydrome. Hope your midwife can reassure you!

You should be fine, I'm sure this has happened to many girls. Just make sure that you don't drink anymore and mention it to your MW at your next appointment. If you are really concerned, ring up the doc and talk to a nurse for reassurance. Congrats on your bump, hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy.

FAS has been difficult to pin down. It seems there is no set amount/time that is ok for everyone. Some women who drink very heavily have no problems. Some, well, just the opposite. There really is no sense worrying (but we all know that is difficult) as you won't know until after the baby is born & then it may be well after the baby is born as for many it shows up as a learning disorder. Just take good care of yourself from this point forward.
