medication for ms, ok?

Hi everyone,

Hopefully someone in here can help me with this. I have had bad ms for the last 6 weeks and it is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon even though I am at 12 weeks now. I saw my doctor today and she said "why didn't you call me, I could have given you something to take!?" I was confused because i thought I COULDN'T take anything. She prescribed Prokinyl (Métoclopramide) and told me to take 2 per day. Well, I looked it up on the internet and it turns out that it is not recommended for pregant women (???) Has anyone else taken meds for ms? Is it safe to take? I am so tempted because I can't cope with the ms anymore but I owuldn't want to do anything to harm my baby.

Thanks in advance!

personaly i never heard of taking anything for ms as its just apart of being pregnant so i didnt take anything for it and i had ms all theu pregnancy.

just cuz u hit 12 weeks doesnt mean it just stops, everyone is different and it comes and goes at different stages of pregnancy.

if ur concerned about the meds dont take them

I have been prescribed a tablet for bad and continuing MS (18 weeks) but I decided not to take them as they are not recommended for pregnant women - GP suggested I only take them when it got too bad. But to me there'll never be a day that I'll feel so bad I'd do anything to risk baby.

Hope your MS clears up soon, it's no fun!

It is quite common to be prescribed an anti-emetic for ms. Most of the medications state that they are not suitable for use in pregnancy, but doctors will prescribe where the benefit will outweight the risk.

I believe it's not unusual for ms to last as late as 16 weeks in many women, though it usually subsides before then.

I'm pretty sure that metoclopramide is the drug my best friend was given for her severe ms. She had it for the whole 9 months and now has a beautiful baby girl.

I was prescribed promethazine a couple of weeks ago for ms, but I only had to use it once as it suddenly eased off. It's been rearing its ugly head again though, so I've got them on standby.

I had MS from 6-16 weeks and then woke up one morning and it was gone. I was prescribed metoclopromide by my midwife, and although it says not suitable in pregnancy they deem it safe enough as you wont be taking it for long. I decided not to take it as I was prescribed it about 12-13 weeks cant remember now and i figured if i had managed to live with it for that long i could manage another few weeks. I felt sick all day and vomited a few times per day so it was not too bad.

I was prescribed promethazine too, and i take it, because even tho i am pregnant i also have a job and i have to work, so i take it. i know lots of ppl that have taken it and their babies are fine. I'm sure if your dr prescribed it for you then she thinks it is ok to take...good luck, i hope it eases off soon!

i have taken anti-nausea medicine with all 3 pregnancies without any harm whatsoever. With my son I took promethazine first and then zofran when that didn't work. With my daughter the doctor put me on both promethazine and zofran together because I'm little and he didn't want to chance me losing any weight at all. This time I took promethazine alone because it worked pretty well on it's own this time. Both of those technically say not for pregnancy but it's only because they dont' want the liability that comes with use during pregnancy. If they say not to use it, they can't get in trouble on the SLIM chance of problems. Your doctor wouldn't prescribe anything that was associated with problems in pregnancy so I wouldn't worry about taking them if you want to take them. At 12 weeks you are past the high risk point of birth defects and baby is just fine tuning things and gaining weight from here on out. I've taken metaclopromide before outside of pregnancy and it worked pretty well. There is no reason to feel guilty for needing a break from the sickness.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel too... most women feel better by 16 weeks so you are almost there!

Thanks so much for your answers ladies. I'm still undecided about taking them. I might get them and keep them around for when the ms becomes so bad i can't function.

thanks again and good luck to all of you who suffer from ms..it really is no fun

My morning sickness is so bad the dr's have me on 3 different medications. I was very iffy about taking any meds while pregnant but a good friend was in the hospital for 4months and had tooken all 3, she has 2 beautiful twin girls now

I was in the hospital for 3days for dehydration lost weight and went from 104 to 97 they don't want me to loose more and the meds are helping here and there. I try not to take them around the clock like they want me too, but im just praying for a healthy baby.

They have me on Zofran (ondansetron) Reglan (metoclopramide) N promethazine.......

Hope this helps
