Worried - reassurance needed!

My daughter has done three positive pregnancy tests plus the doctors "official" test.
She had her last period starting on Nov 23rd but she was on the pill and took the pill continuously over the Christmas period so that she didn’t bleed whilst her partner was home on leave.

However, just before Christmas, she had that bug and was really ill with it, both sickness and diarrhoea lasting around 4 or 5 days, which I assume meant the pill didn’t work.

Although the baby wasn’t exactly planned, it IS wanted and as she had a miscarriage a couple of years ago, both she and her partner (and I!) would be devastated if she lost it.

She has seen the doctor today for her first antenatal appointment and the doctor can’t find a heartbeat. She’s using a sound device, not an ultra scan and so the doctor says it must be because her dates are off with her carrying on with the pill and actually she’s probably only about 9 weeks not 14 as her last period would indicate.

This is what she told me when she came out of the doctors as I didn’t go with them and I must admit she didn’t seem worried about it but of course now I’M imagining all sorts of things and I don’t want to quiz her too closely in case SHE starts worrying when there might be no reason to.

They’ve told her she’ll get her first scan in about 4 weeks but I don’t know if I can wait that long to find out if everything is ok! If I paid for a private dating scan, would it be able to determine if everything is ok?

Can anyone tell me if this sounds normal?

If we went for a private scan, can anyone recommend anywhere in Manchester?

If you get an ultra sound then you should be able to see the baby, I saw mine when I was 8wks. And heard the heartbeat too, so if you don't want to wait then it's definately an option.

my midwife didnt like to take the heartbeat before 16 weeks with the doppler as sometimes it couldnt be picked up due to babys position . but a scan would be the best option to put you and your daughters mind at rest. good luck x x

The scan will put your mind at ease. I dont know anywhere in Manchester - my sister just contacted our local BUPA hospital. See who it is on the web and give them a bell.
Try not to worry - Its very common not to pick up a HB at that stage on a doppler.
Let us know how she gets on.

I definitley have the scan if you can afford it. It's really precious to see the heartbeat, and it will reassure both of you.
I found this site....

I went to the doctors during my 12th week and my doctor could not find the heartbeat. Yes, it's scarey but often it is too soon and the baby is just so small to detect it at that point in pregnancy. Also, my own heartbeat was so loud that it overpowered any other sounds.

Looking back at my prior pregnancies, the heartbeat was detected at 13 weeks but was very faint. At around 17 weeks, the heartbeat was very strong.

If there are concerns, perhaps she can request an early scan and put her mind at ease

My midwife tried to find the heartbeat at about 12 weeks and couldn´t so i had a horrible week waiting for my scan to see if everything was ok. The waiting and not knowing is the worst.
