I've had it; I had the swine flu in my left arm and the seasonal in my right. I'm asthmatic too, so I had to think of my overall health. There's often more at stake if you have other health issues. I've had no side effects... not that I'd know because I'm feeling ruff anyway!

If you do the math less than .001% of the US population die of influenza/pneumonia. Only around 36,000 people total got the flu last year and of those accounts, it was about 9 or 10% who died. Which is about 3,500 people. Total. There are over 300 BILLION people who live in the US. So honestly, the chance of you contracting it, then dying from it are very slim. Of course it would be terrible to be in that small percentage. If you are likely to be exposed (like you know it's in your kids school already or people at work have had it) then yeah, there is more of a risk so absolutely take that into consideration. I'd just caution that we get to be part of the research on the results of it considering the initial human testing won't be finished until early 2010. Plus they've already altered the ingredients because they were running low so they are trying to get more per dose. Oh and if you do get the vaccine make sure you check the vial (even if it insults the nurse) to be positive you got the one that has no mercury in it. Nurses are humans and with the kind of response for this vaccine, mistakes are happening. It's your health so take charge of it!

I'm not sure it's dying that's the issue, but rather the stress that having swine flu can put on your during pregnancy. Though I totally agree with talking charge!

Princesameesh: Your numbers are wrong
From the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/H1N1flu/qa.htm
"With seasonal flu, we know that seasons vary in terms of timing, duration and severity. Seasonal influenza can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Each year, in the United States, on average 36,000 people die from flu-related complications and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related causes. Of those hospitalized, 20,000 are children younger than 5 years old. Over 90% of deaths and about 60 percent of hospitalization occur in people older than 65.

When the 2009 H1N1 outbreak was first detected in mid-April 2009, CDC began working with states to collect, compile and analyze information regarding the 2009 H1N1 flu outbreak, including the numbers of confirmed and probable cases and the ages of these people. The information analyzed by CDC supports the conclusion that 2009 H1N1 flu has caused greater disease burden in people younger than 25 years of age than older people. At this time, there are relatively fewer cases and deaths reported in people 65 years and older, which is unusual when compared with seasonal flu. However, pregnancy and other previously recognized high risk medical conditions from seasonal influenza appear to be associated with increased risk of complications from this 2009 H1N1. These underlying conditions include asthma, diabetes, suppressed immune systems, heart disease, kidney disease, neurocognitive and neuromuscular disorders and pregnancy."

Here is a link to more information for pregnant women:
http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance/pregnant.htm
The swine flu is different than seasonal flu in that it is more dangerous to pregnant women and children than the seasonal flu (which is generally more dangerous to the elderly).

I got it through work, but im not preggo (well could be 4 weeks?)

I was told if you do not get the shot and you contract H1N1 your baby will be put into isolation for a week when it is born because there is the potential that the baby may be carrying it. That may just be ontario practice, but it is done for infection control.

I got the h1n1 (non-adjavant) vaccine and the regular flu shot in the other. Figure I'd rather take the chance of the "hypothetical" side effects of the vaccine than the actual danger of getting the h1n1 flu while pregnant. I feel perfectly fine after getting the vaccine.

Hi lakeland fairy,

I've just been offered the vaccine too and am trying to decide what to do. I think i will probably get it, as someone else posted take the chance with the hypothetical risk of side effects against the real risk of contracting the flu. Also, although it seems like it has been rushed through, i'm told it has been created using the same method as the seasonal flu jab and so it's no more rushed than they are...

That said, i do have concerns. If i do decide to go ahead i'm going to wait until after my scan so i can be sure to arrange it once i'm past the 12 week stage as i figure all the baby's major development will be complete. not sure if that makes a difference, but will make me feel better!!

it is a hard decision and i guess it won't be the last we have to make for the health of our little ones!

i had a chat with my doc about the jab. my surgery hasnt got it yet but will be. he said that swine flu seems to be hitting pregnant women very hard. the seasonal flu jab is always a new thing as they have to change it every year to cover new strains. he couldnt see any difference between the risks of the seasonal jab and swine flu one.
now im not saying that he is right but just what he told me. i dont get a flu jab normally, but am edging towards it simply for the reason that i have 2 other children to look after as well as this little bean. getting ill is somehting i would rather avoid.

I had the swine flu jab today after my midwife appointment. I feel ok - slightly sore arm but ok apart from that. I know i will feel much more confident about getting public transport to work now - with all the people coughing and sneezing all over me!
