Grrrr! Selfish people!

I sometimes wonder why people are so selfish?

I was sent home from work on Thursday as I was ill – a combination of a terrible headache and morning sickness, ended up taking Friday off as well as I just felt awful. Have come in this morning to be told by my immediate line manager that her OH has got swine flu. She was coughing, spluttering and complaining that she had the sweats at 8.30am this morning so I told her to go home because she obviously isn’t well. She knows I am pregnant and I told her that I really can’t risk being in such close contact with someone who could have swine flu – our small office which we share has no openable windows and has air conditioning so is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria

In the end I went and told her line manager to send her home as I wasn’t comfortable sitting in the office with her because of obvious reasons (he also knows I am pregnant). That was at 9 o clock. He told her to leave but she is still here and keeps saying that she has stuff she needs to finish before she can go.

I’ve told her five times now to go home and I’m getting quite angry. She keeps apologising whilst coughing everywhere and saying that she knows she shouldn’t have come in but yet she won’t bl**dy go home!

I can’t ask to sit somewhere else as there are no spare desks so I’m stuck here. Even if she goes our office is now going to be full of her germs. If I get swine flu I am really not going to be impressed!!!!!

I agree, I work in a similar office, very small and I've already caught 2 viruses back to back due to people coming in and spreading germs, if she doesn't leave then you should go home, you shouldn't have to sit there being coughed over!

Has your Manager not carried out a Risk Assessment for you???

I would leave yourself. Definitely.

Unfortunately the place I work doesn’t do such thing, mainly because they are crap – we don’t even have an appraisal system in place let alone doing a risk assessment because I am pregnant. I don’t think they even know what one is!

Well she eventually left at about 12.30, as soon as she went I got some disinfectant wipes from the school nurse and wiped absolutely everywhere in the office that I could do. I told her not to come back to work until she is better as I know she’ll probably try and come in tomorrow

It just infuriates me that I should even have to have told her to go home, common sense should have made her realise that she shouldn’t have come in, she even said so herself

I’m hoping she will stay at home for at least the rest of the week, I don’t want to be sharing her germs thanks very much

Your work has a legal obligation to do a risk assessment, there is no reason not too. They are legally responsible of keeping you safe at work within your normal duties - In saying that i doubt they take other peoples illnesses into account when they do it, it's more lifting and movement they worry about.
