I guess I was quite lucky to see my GP at only 3+6, though as someone said earlier it was anti-climactic. She did congratulate me, checked my weight and BP and made sure I was taking folic acid.

I was then advised to make an appt with the surgery mw at reception, but that it had to be after 7 weeks. My appt is booked for when I'm 7+4, make sure you get yours booked early as there were no available slots with my mw for 3 weeks anyway.

I was also given a "bounty pack" which contains the all important Personal Maternity Record which you have to take to every appt and a few info leaflets with contact numbers, basic pg advice etc.

There's also a list of typical appt schedules which tell you what happens at each one. It says the following will be done at the booking appt, which lasts around 45 minutes:
  • History, BP, BMI, MSU
  • Screening Advice
  • Full Booking Blood Tests
  • Dietary Advice inc. Vit D & Folic Acid Supplements
  • Lifestyle and Smoking Cessation Advice
  • Plan of Antenatal Care

Hello!

My experience so far

It all seems to depend where you live but they just assume you are pregnant by your own results and then you can book in to see your midwife between 6 - 8 weeks. I wanted to see doc first and just took it upon myself to bring a urine sample and plonk it on her desk (4 weeks) as I just wanted to hear it from a doctor!! She said they don't normally test but she went off and found one for me and talked through foods to avoid etc. Got a pack at reception and booked my 1st midwife appt for 6 + 3 (today!) The Doc was smashing.

Went to midwife today. Official midwife was missing so had a replacement one from another surgery. She just took BP, height, weight and gave me a pack to get my bloods done took about 20 mins. Booked me in to see the other midwife at 8 + 5 - said this appt will take an hour and has sent a form to get the first scan appointment booked in - they will be in touch to tell me when. Went and got my bloods done today at the hospital. I get the feeling most of this would have all normally been done at one appointment but the real midwife had gone missing!

The midwife was late, stressed out and didn't know where anything was. Apart from that, she was quite nice. Don't expect fireworks. I think the first scan is the exciting part.

Good luck! x

Well I just rang my surgery after reading this and asked the receptionist what to do. She was very nice and helpful and booked me in with the Midwife there and then and told me that she would send me out the information pack etc today. I have my apt on 8th December at 12pm. I will be 9+1 weeks then. I'm glad I called and spoke to her now as I feel all excited counting down.

Wow if my GP says that I'll give her evils. That's is *not* what I want to hear (even though I'm aware of the facts).

That would worry the hell out of anyone. why would they say that? The knowledge that they are common won't stop it from happening so why scare pregnant women?

The fact is that they have to take into consideration the miscarriage percentage cos the state is paying for all of this work (I am assuming you are talking about public health care here). If you want a scan earlier then find a private clinic and go get one.... that's what we did with our first at 5wks, but tbh there ain't much to see... we then had one at 9wks and that's when we saw the heartbeat. If you haven't had major pain (not talking about normal cramping and twinges) or bleeding then you really shouldn't worry girls....

I've got my GP appointment tomorrow, I told the receptionist what it was for and she didn't ask how far along I thought I was or anything else, she just made the appointment, I guess it depends on the doctors that you go to or the region you're in.

From what everyone has said I'm guessing seeing the midwife is more exciting, I hope it comes shortly after the GP appointment, I don't wanna wait that long! x
