To qualify for SMP you have to have been employed by the same employer for 26 weeks upto the 15th week before your EDD (about 25 weeks pregnant).

Basically you need to be employed before you are pregnant to qualify.

For MA, you need to have been employed or self employed for 26 weeks in your test period which is the 66 weeks prior to your due date. Out of those 26 weeks, you pick your most lucrative 13 weeks and that is what they base your MA amount on.

If however you register as self employed and pay your class 2 NI contributions for at least 13 weeks, you are automatically entitled to the full amount of MA which is currently £123.06.

Based on all that I would say you will be entitled to MA at a rate of £123.06 or 90% of your gross earnings which ever is the smaller.

Check out the direct gov site for more info.
