Hi
Im intrigued how some people go for a scan earlier than 12 weeks, is this because you asked for one or it was offered? I have to wait until 12 weeks and its driving me mad. I was tempted to ask for an earlier one but wasnt sure if this was possible?

I think some people get earlier scans due to problems and some countrys do them from 6 weeks anyway (so i've heard) but in most areas its 12 weeks and 20 weeks.

I dont think you can just ask for one in the UK. Obv is can be different in the US as people have health care insurance. You usually only get them early if they want to rule out complications - ie. if you are in pain/bleeding. My sister had an early one as she was bleeding but they then didnt do her 12 week one as she'd already had one at 8 weeks and they'd dated her then. She had to go private to get another or wait until 20 weeks for the anatomy scan. She went private and it cost her about £130.

Here in South Africa once you find out your pregnant you phone your gynae and book an appointment for anywhere between 8 - 12 weeks (this is all my experience alone)

Then at that check up an ultrasound is normally done. Then another one at between 15-20 weeks then one in the last trimester.

You can ask for more if you want they have no problem with that. Afterall you're paying.

I've had two sofar with my 12week mark being on Wednesday. But that's because of an previous miscarriage. My next one will be at 15 weeks.

Sorry I don't know how it works in all the other countries. But at least I've explained me


EDIT: oops! Forgot to add. I have medical aid. (insurance) without it you would probably get 2 ultrasounds done at 12 and around 20 weeks. Because the government then pays for them.

Normally, in the US they wait until 10-12 weeks, but in cases of high risk they often will do them earlier, and more frequently. In my case, my periods are very irregular so I am going today to see how far along I am.

I had a scan at 7 weeks due to bleeding and also had a private one then aswell (because the NHS made me wait 6 days and I was going out of my mind ). I then had another private one at 11 weeks and then had my 12 week one as normal. My private scans cost £50 each.

first scan is always at 12 wks unless you have bleeding or pain....i know how you feel im 8 weeks pregnant with my 3rd and its long.... i dont mind labour a bit i just dont like the first 4 mths of pregnancy......

Im 7 weeks with my first and its all so new to me.
(This forum has been the best thing ever for keeping me sane !! )
Im sure 12 weeks will come round in no time !!!
