| Dating scan - a few quessies? Hi girls,
I've got my dating scan tomorrow - scared and exciting at the same time!
This is my first pg, so not sure what to expect, so i have a few questions:
My 2 x stepkids want to come along (9 & 7) will they be allowed?
I assume I need to remove my belly button ring (silly question maybe!)?
Will they let me have a picture etc as its only a dating scan?
Is there a difference between a dating scan and a 12 wk scan - as in if I am 12wks + will they do all the normal things (whatever they are) they would normally do in a 12 week scan?
If I'm only say 9wks - will I still get a 12wk scan?
At what stage (say for instance 7wks) can they tell much from the scan?
Hmm thats a lot of questions isn't it! Soooo excited I am! | | | | Status: Online

I don't think you need to remove your belly ring, but I am not sure (not removing mine). I am in the US so not sure how different things are! |

Hmm thats a lot of questions isn't it! Soooo excited I am! | Your stepkids should be fine to tag along - Although some hospitals only allow one in the room with you, others are more lenient.
Your 12 week scan is a dating scan, so no, they are looking for the same things. They are predominantly interested in working out when baby is due, but do do a few other checks, for instance checking where the placenta is, whether the amniotic fluid volume in normal etc....
If they are able to date your pregnancy at this scan, your dating scan may be cancelled. Even if you are only 7 weeks they can tell you how many weeks pregnant you are, but the due date given may not be as accurate as the one given at 12 weeks. You should get a picture, if they don't offer, make sure you ask...but remember that some hospitals charge for them!
Oh and no, you don't have to remove your belly button ring! |

I'm Currently Feeling: | I had a dating scan, i was unsure of my dates, at my hospital they don't always do 12 weeks scans so i was glad i told them i was unsure of my dates anyway.
I asked for pictures which i didn't have to pay for, i was told i will have to pay at 20 week scan for pictures this is £5 per picture. She measured the baby and all the necessary stuff.
It wasn't a very long scan, i suppose the main thing is checking due date and making sure baby is ok, she showed me the baby for a couple of minutes but that was about it, i was in and out in ten minutes maximum. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | This sounds horrible but I am pretty sure children are not allowed in early scans due the high percentage of early losses - I wouldn't risk taking children with me unless you knew you would be strong enough to explain to the children what was happening if the scan showed there was something wrong. Our hospital has a strict no children policy for this very reason.
Best of luck, keep us updated |
