Pain and back ache - is it normal?

Hi all,
I have just found this place whilst frantically searching for answers.
We have just had the great news that we are expecting - after being told it may not happen due to conditions I have.
Anyway, it looks like we are 5 weeks if we go by the date of my last period. My breast have been so sore, full and tender for the last 2 weeks and I have had some wierd tummy aches, so I suspected something was up. I booked an appointment to see the Doc, to see if my old issues were surfacing again, before I went mu hubby suggested I did a a preg test - to our shock it was positive. (I normally have 5 week periods, so I hadn't even missed a period yet!) Doctor did another test and confirmed the good news.

My major concern is over the last 4 days I have had period like cramps and a dull lower back ache. No bleeding or spotting. Has anyone else experienced this? It feels as if my period is about to start. My doctor said not to worry as it may just be my uterus changing (can't believe it would bu much in 5 weeks hough). He also said other women feel the same - however I have never heard of any other women complain that they get cramps.

I have an increased chance of ectopic - so my doc said if I am still worried in a few weeks, or if I bleed then I could try and get an emergancy scan. So although I am worried about this, I am more concerned that these period pains are a sign I will miscarry. As I understand it - ectopic pain is quite sharp and in one area along with bleeding.

Sorry to go on! I'm just so worried!!!!

I have had them off and on and lots of others on here have. Apparently its just stretching etc going on. Dont worry unless its severe or accompanied with bleeding. If you are concerned esp about ectopic, you can go to the Drs and get an early scan. I had one earlier this week after severe pains and felt much better after being reassured that everything looks ok.

Thanks!
I think i'm just a bit paranoid as I can't imaging my uterus stretching when it's so tiny at this week!!! It is a relief to know that other mum's experience it, although I wish it would say it in some of the books would make us not worry if it happends.
To make matters worse we are going to Mexico on holiday at Easter ( expected wk 10) So I have this worry in my head that it will go wrong when I don't have the NHS round the corner!

Thanks again - and I hope it all goes well for you.

Hope all goes well for you too hun.

It's normal

It's just your uterus stretching and preparing itself. Yep it starts quite early. That's why we all keep expecting AF to arrive.

As long as the pains aren't terribly painful or accompanied with blood then there's nothing to worry about.

You'll find lots of little aches and cramps rise. They get quite spooky at times but just remember it is just your body adapting.

Back aches I never had so early. I'm getting it now at 11-12 weeks. Like muscle aches almost. But I'm getting them across my tummy too.

EDIT: Sorry just reread your post and wanted to add. Ectopic pregnancies I obsessed about before my first scans. Apparently the pain gets worse and in bad cases it's unbareable and can be accompanied with blood. Also it's more to one side.
However pain in the side of your abdomen doesn't mean it's a ectopic pregnancy. I got that too. Quite a sharp pain. It was never severe but it scared me to no end.

I'll stick to my original advise though. As long as it isn't accompanied by blood or isn't severe it's fine. Period type cramps aren't a cause for concern at all.
Congrats on your pregnancy and all the best!

LMAO!! They're rather comforting aren't they? I never thought I'd feel that way about dull aches.

I've had them a lot since I've been pregnant. It's so embarassing when I'm in a panic to realise it's just gas

A good thing I've learnt is when I get the pain to lay down and concentrate on where it's coming from. Normally you'll find it's no where's near your uterus and could even just be bloating.

I hope it gets better soon hun

I had really bad cramping, and lower back pain last week, then like Charliepops worried when they went! Still getting twinges and rhs is currently aching!

I had an ectopic in Dec 04, but didn't have any particular symptoms until my tube ruptured, but after doing research I understand that you can have an aching shoulder along with other symtoms (pain concentrated on one side, bleeding, dizziness and a change in stools). Also, your dr can do an HCG test as the hormones don't increase as rapidly in an ectopic pregnancy.

I'm sure though that your cramping is just a sign of a normal pregnancy! A lot of us get it! Good luck!
