| GP prescribed me valium for flying! I am a nervous flyer, and have to fly on Friday for a holiday in Corfu (booked before I got my BFP).
I had an appointment with my GP and told him I was pregnant some 4 weeks ago. During the appointment I also told him about the holiday and was about to ask for an alternative remedy for my nerves. He whipped out a textbook, said valium was only contraindicated during the last trimester or if there was an addiction issue, and prescribed me it
I havent got the valium as I am very hesitant. Ive googled it, and some websites seem to think that valium use is linked to birth defects. I have been prescribed 10 mgs of valium (5mgs each way). Oh I dont know what to do. I will be stressed and nervous without it, but am tempted to try and 'go it alone'. I have felt calmer generally since becoming pregant. Anyway, I know we're not doctors but Id appreciate any thoughts/opinions.
Thanks xx | | | | Status: Offline

I too was a terrible flyer, valium, hypnosis then I was recommended this book, read it and thought WTF was that all about. Now I can fly without a worry in the world.

| If the book your doctor has said it was only bad in the last tri, that's probably the most up to date info available. Also, even if there were a slight chance of birth defects with it, that would be caused by consistent use of it over a period of time.. not just using it twice. There are a lot of things that aren't generally a great idea during pregnancy but that you can have a few times without worrying about it. With most things it's consistent use rather than one time use that you have to avoid. | | | | Status: Offline

| And you could always try to do it without the valium, but take it with you just in case. That way if you really need it, you have it but if you can do it without it you just toss it when you get home! | | | | Status: Offline

| Thanks MrsJD and honeygrl, both of your suggestions are great. I think Ill get the Allen Carr book (hes helped me quit smoking in the past so I know he's good) and also get the valium as a crutch, and then try to get through it with the book. If I do need the valium I will try not to worry about using it as a 'one off' in such a small dose xx | | | | Status: Offline

| I flew before I knew I was prego and I took Xanax. So far everything seems to be fine with the baby, but now I don't take it at all. I would just take the valium with you. Just the thought of knowing you have it might help you remain calm. And try out the book that Honeygrl recommened, I think I read something similar to that as well that helped me relax.
Good luck! | | | | Status: Offline
