i'm waiting for my dating scan and i'm totally rubbish at babies so i don't have a clue what to expect.

If someone that has had one (preferably in the UK) could give me a hint as to what to expect?

i seriously need a cigarette and a bottle of wine

there is nothing to it really hun they ask you when you think you are due, the date of your last period. you need to take your pants down to just above the hair line and they press over your tummy and you get your new due date from the measurements of the baby it doesnt take long bout 15 mins in and out you need to make sure you have a full bladder before you go for your scan which i found the hardest thing lol

My dating scan was over very quickly.

They make you lay down in a dark room and lower the your trousers a little. Then they put gel on your belly and look for baby. Depending on how far you are it sometimes takes a while to find. They found mine quickly but struggled to find a heart beat for a bit which was worrying. Eventually they did though!!

They measure the baby on the screen a few times and take the most accurate measurement & the computer works out for them how many weeks you are. If you watch the screen you will see it adjusting to each measurment they take.

If you have a good sonographer they sometimes point out little things about baby for you, like the feet and hands. They'll also quickly check other things like your uterus and overies to make sure everything looks normal & hopefully print of a picture or two for you.

Then you normally have to wait a few mins while they print out a report to add to you're notes.

gosh i get pictures already? i'm not going to be much use answering their questions because i cant remember when i last had a period. I'm really excited now! thanks for the speedy answers :-)

I was in and out within about 10 minutes, nothing to worry about, i didn't get asked about my last period as they measure from the head to bottom of the baby and can tell you how far pregnant you are. They put me 3 days ahead of what i thought i was.

Its amazing seeing your little baby for the first time, so enjoy it!! the picture under my name was my 12 week scan pic!

I don't think it matters too much if you don't know when your preiod was. They just like to compare where you think you should be in your pregnancy to where you actually are to make sure baby is growing well.

You might have to ask for the pictures but hopefully you'll get some. Not everywhere gives them though.

I had one a few weeks ago. It was very easy and quicky. How far along do you think you are? If you are over 12 weeks (I believe) they should be able to do an external ultrasound. Otherwise they may have to do an internal ultrasound. The technician will just take the baby's measurements, heartbeat etc.

i think i'm between 6-8 weeks maybe 10? im just getting impatient now waiting for the scan!!

great, my doctor was seriously behind the times and they don't do dating scans in Bath anymore so unless i go in claiming abdominal cramps i'll be waithing another 2 months!!
