Folic acid - single supplement or in prenatal vitamin?

I've been merrily taking a prenatal vitamin each day containing 400 micrograms of folic acid (and all the other vitamins and minerals). Is this what everyone else does or do you take a folic acid supplement PLUS a prenatal supplement?

I hope I've been taking enough. This can be my thing to worry about today.

hey there, the guideline is for 400 mcg a day, therefore if it is included in your supplement you dont need to take anything else. I hope this helps!

I was thinking this too, as I had a prescription of folic acid on its own from the doctors but i'm not taking them as I take a pre-natal vitamin that already has 400 mg in it plus other vits and minerals.. What i'm actually taking though is the Pregnacare conception rather than the Pregnacare normal as I fell pregnant a lot sooner than I anticipated and didn't want to waste 3 boxes of them, is that ok??

thats strange! over here in the uk we are told to take 400mcg.
You can take extra vitamins if you wish but its always best to try to eat healthily... not always easy when the sickness kicks in and thats when the extra vitamins are needed xxx

Thanks for your replies everyone. I actually put a call in to my doctor and she said that me taking my 400micrograms of folic acid in my prenatal multivitamin and mineral is absolutely fine and I don't need to supplement further.

I've now been out and bought some called "Ante-Natal Forte" by Biocare.

I was also taking the multi vit but found it caused my morning sickness to get worse so i have stopped i plan on getting some folic acid on its own and keep taking that for a bit longer i think as long as you have a healthy diet you dont need to take any other supplements. Its funny my hubbie does not believe in taking supplements as he is not convinced they work. Until i got pregnant and then he frets if i forget to take them

Most of the OTC prenatals in the US are also 800mcg now as well.
