emma 1980 - Most people who have contracted swine flu recover within a week and do not suffer complications, even without being given antiviral medication.

However, experts point out that as this is a new virus, its behaviour cannot be predicted with certainty.

Swine flu is different from seasonal flu in that most serious illnesses have been in younger age groups.

A doctor faced with a symptomatic patient cannot yet predict with certainty the course of their illness and whether or not they will be in the small proportion who may become more seriously ill.

This is why antiviral medication is still being given to all those with swine flu in the UK, subject to their doctor’s discretion.

Got this off the nhs website.

Think the main concern is people with underlying illness or weak immune systems can not fight off the swine flu so thats why there are deaths

I'm just surprised that your doctor diagnosed you based on symptoms alone. Normally you would need to have blood work, if for no other reason to 'confirm' a case of the flu for those studying the spread of the illness.

So it the doctor not doing any blood work for confirmation at all?

no most doctors just say you have swine flu symptoms so dont actually do blood tests to confirm it is actually swine flu.

emma 1980 i wouldnt worry if you are feeling better you will be fine the time to worry is if after a fe days you wasnt any better or had gotten worse

hi Memewest
I hope things are getting better for you and I wish you a speedy recovery. It is a really interesting post and I am pleased to read everyones comments re swine flu. I am fairly sure OH had it last week (aching body, sore through, chills then fever) and it is difficult to know what to worry about.

As yet, I have not had any real flu-like symptoms, but it is really helpful to know a little more about it.
Get well soon

You poor thing!!!! I hope someone is looking after you!!!! I find the best thing for flus is hot water with honey (ideally manuka honey which is high in antibacterial type stuff) and havign cups throughout the day.

On the plus side it seems like you'll be over it soon and I spoke to my midwife today and she said that if you have it and it's not serious (only a small amount of pregnant women get complications) and you get over it you'll develop antibodies to fight the virus and so will your foetus!!!! So in a way, it looks like, after a bout of hard work being ill, you'll be better off than most of us still fretting about it and your baby won't be in danger after it's born!

I know you probably don't feel like celebrating just yet but just ride it out and keep your head up and your temperature down!
