so my scan started and she told me i was 12 weeks today, saw a heartbeat saw a hand and a leg so i was all happy

but then she told me that there was 3mm of nuchal fluid and that 2.5 mm was the normal amount, and that she couldnt at this point detect the nasal bone

she said that at the moment the risk of downs syndrome is small, but was very vague about everything really, so i to say i am worried is a massive understatement, the lady doing the scan said that the hospital has started extra screening and thats the reason why she has noticed it

i have to go to a different hospital for a second opinion on wednesday, and then if its agreed more tests will be done i have come away from it all feeling very deflated

has anyone had the same thing? i am so worried
Sorry to hear your scan didnt go as well as excpected

I had a higher than average nuchal measurement which was detected at a 10wk scan, was refered for CVS but this couldnt be done as the placenta wasnt in a good enough position, During a scan at 14wks my babys nasal bone was detected, Finally got an ammnio done at 15ks which came back clear.
Turns out my higher nuchal measurement was a marker for a major heart defect which is treatable with surgery. Higher nuchal measurements can be indicators for so many things.

If i were you i would try and not worry too much, if you get a ruler and see what exactly 3mm is you will find it is very small, in terms of a nasal bone again your baby is very small and these things are sometimes very hard to pick up on early scans.

I would perhaps call your mw and have a chat about things, i know what its like to come away feeling all deflated and not knowing if your coming or going but these things dont always mean the worst.

Good luck for wed xxxx

thank you for your reply, its kind of hard to think of anything else, im glad the next scan is so soon, dont think i could handle the wait if it was weeks, the lady doing the scan said she probably would not even have noticed it if she had not worked somewhere where they have screened for it before so i suppose im lucky in that respect, i could have been sat here unaware that there could be a problem and i think that may have been worse

I just found out that only 1 in 50 ladies who actually get a positive screen for downs (which you havent got yet) actually haven a baby with downs.

Agree with kittee and aidedhoney gave great advice... can be lots of things. Def call midwife and talk it through. Plus if they've just started the nuchal scannign then they're just being very sure and aren't probrably too sure about the exact thing to do... she's just being cautious. Nothing to worry about at this point and good luck x

Yup honey it will be on your mind till wed comes but please try and think positive happy thoughts, the lady has said her self she wouldnt have noticed it had it not been for her previous workplace.
Only advice i can give is write down any questions you may have and take it with you on wed.
Sending you big hugs and loads of PMA.

Good luck xx
