| Horses & Babies Hi im posting this to get as many opinions as i can, I know maybe not many people will know about horses on here but its worth a shot! I own my own horse who i love dearly shes kept at stables on D.I.Y Livery which as you can guess means i go up daily and make sure her stables cleaned fed, shes excercised etc.
iv recently found out im pregnant which im over the moon with but i dont want to lose my horse either, Iv heard of women who ride right through there pregnancy and some who dont. I was planning on not riding until 2nd tri and then only doing some gentle work. But at the same time im thinking of just not riding at all(to be safe) shes only young so im doing alot of lunging with her just now( basically me on foot her working on a long line round me in a circle) I also have a friend who is going to ride her from october onwards whilst her horse is laid off. so i dont have to worry too much about keeping her fit. Its more other things like i cant quite imagine being able to groom her with a big bump in the way!! so iv condsidered putting her on full livery (paying someone else to do what i cant) when im too big to take care of her myself shes so placid and gentle i know id be fine doing the very basics feeding etc.
Im also worried though about when bubz arrives will i still have time for her i only spend an hour to two hours a day normally unless im riding and have a great family to are willing to babysit and daddy of course! i know i wont want to leave my baby but i do love having a hobby. I sound mad dont i everyone iv spoke to says i should try and keep up my hobby yeah it will be difficullt when pregnant but i should get into a routine when baby arrives when theres a will theres a way!
what a long post

| hey hun i have my own horse too as soon as i found out i was preg i stopped riding because i didnt want to take the risk plus OH wouldn't allow it i still do the groundwork with him and my friend rides for me and i too worry that when bubs is here i wont have the time for him but then i have plenty of sitters for bubs and i think riding will be my way of getting a break and some me time.
i honestly think its a personal choice if you keep riding or not but sounds like if your friend is going to work her for you then you won't need to but it is so hard not to i miss it so much and can't wait to get back in the saddle. xx | | | | Status: Offline

| Its totally up to you.
I own my own horse and do training. I rode a coupleof my training horses right up until 7 months, and then rode my horse until 8 months... after that It simply just got too uncomfortable. I was back riding 3 weeks after I had her, and still have a couple training hroses.
If you love something, you will find a way to make it work
I know I could never do daily care of a horse at this point (unless it was at my own place), I board my horse at a full care facility. | | | | Status: Offline

| With my first I had 23/24 horses, foaled 6 mares down when 7 months pregnant did ALL the groundwork with mares/foals and stallion. The only thing I will NOT do is ride or take on anything that isnt well handled. Riding is an individual choice, personally I refuse to risk it even though my riding mare is 100% safe, IF I fell I would never forgive myself so I stay with my feet on the ground. Infact my riding mare is going on loan to a teenager til baby us here so thats been very useful!
I now only have eight (only...haha) and will continue to do what I do with all of them, which is just the handling and inhand showing. I am glad actually that baby is due in winter as it means no missing any showing or trying to juggle a newborn and getting horses transported to shows, shown and home again which is what I was doing when my son was born...infact when he was 6 weeks old I was back doing working hunter classes.
Certainly the case that where there is a will there is a way, may be a case of putting horse on full or part livery when baby arrives as you WILL have less time (baby always demands to be fed just as you tack up.....) vbut you do adjust to it. When my son went to school in September I ended up wondering what I would do with all the time I suddenly had....ah well...it will have lasted a year...!!! | | | | Status: Online

| I sold my horses just before i fell pregnant but personally i would if i still had ice id ride him up untill i couldnt get on him. If you can get full livery at your yard then id deffinatly do that i think it is expensive but if theirs no other option then its probebly worth it. I dont know if at your yard they exersize them on full livery, but at most yards ive been to the horses would be exersized daily for you. x | | | | Status: Offline

| Hi thanks for the replies! I am going to stick to what im doing at the mo me excercising her on my feet lol! shes really benefiting from what im doing with her so its not a waste of time or effort, I do have the option of full livery if i need it too so thats a weight off knowing that i dont have to look for someone to loan her etc. Theres always a Risk with kicking i think but i think you just know if your horse has the kind of nature that would kick. its a complex subject obviously theres the fact that horses can be unpredicatable like any animal but i can literally can do anything with her and she doesnt even do so much as pull a face in season or not. Ill just have to make sure i dont get myself into a situation where it would be easy to recieve a kick which wont be easy lol! I think i just gotta be extra careful thanks for all your responses

| Hey hun we have 2 as well sec d Rhona and Dartmoor, we have our own land next to our house which i must say makes a great difference, i used to be at diy and tobe honest your fine doin your jobs it will juyst make you more tired when u get further on. I personaly have ridden twice since i found out i was pregnant, im currently 10+4 and im lunging alot ot keep her fitness up. I have also got a girl thats 17 thats rides every wed and sunday. I think you'll be fine to to light road wiork ect when u get past 12wks as long as your horse is not a nut job, your other option is to get a sharing in that would take the heat off you a little xxx good luck xxx | | | | Status: Offline

| It's totally up to the individual. I worked with horses for 12 years, did equine courses at college and thought I was safe enough in a yard enviroment to not have an accident. It had crossed my mind though so when I was pregnant with our last baby last year I posted a thread about if I should carry on and decided that I knew enough to keep myself and our baby safe.
It was a freak accident but I lost our baby last year at 21 weeks after falling on the yard and it's mentally affected me so much I haven't been back near one since.
I know a lot of people carry on fine and have no problems but as I suppose with everything there's the rare flip side.
I would keep doing what you're doing and make sure you don't over do it with mucking out etc. It's nice of your friend to offer to work her for you | | | | Status: Offline
