x-rays and pregancy

Hi everyone!!

First of all I wish you all the best of luck with your pregnancies.

I am 5 weeks pregnant (my first) and it wasnt planned. In the first two weeks of the pregnancy i had a panoramic dental x-ray. I wasnt aware that i was pregnant at the time.

I m really scared. Can anything happen to the fetus? I havent asked my doctor, but i m going to on my next visit. What do you think? Has any of you been in any similar situation? Please any answer would be enormously apprieciated.

Hi and Congratulations!

I need to go to the dentists soon so have been reading up on treatments, a site i read says problems are only likely to occur at very high doses (i think if you have numerous x-rays), and if the X-rays are actually directed at the abdominal area. I would ask your MW though to confirm as this is only something i have read, i am going to ask her before i go to the dentist also. Good luck, i am sure everything will be fine x

The site does say however (for future reference) to try and leave future dental treatments i.e fillings etc until after birth.

Hi there.

dont worry. I too paniced when I thought I might be pregnant and my dentist said i needed some x-rays. I asked him about it and he said to not worry at all - they are directed at the tooth and are low dose - he said it was like being otuside in the sun for a while. He explained that he hides behind a barrier simply because he does so many every day, but really he explained that for me and baby there is no risk.

When I questioned the work I needed doing he explained that he prefers to treat pregnant ladies immediately ratehr than wait until after the pregnancy as the worst thing is to leave the infection to become worse - which could spread in the blood.

So really, I wouldnt worry.
Avoid unnecessary x-rays...but then, who really has x-rays just for fun?

I had a dentist appt last week and looked up on various sites beforehand as to the risk of x-ray - all the sites I looked at said there was no risk as it was such a low dosage.

The dentist has said though that he would postpone doing the work I need doing until after I give birth. he did recommend having my teeth professionally cleaned by them now, for which I have another appt and again 6 weeks before the birth.
