I wanted to have a w/b with my first, but I've been warned I'm not allowed one this time as for pain relief, I'm not allowed epidural and I managed on G&A and a pethedine injection about 45 mins before I delivered...gona see if I can just do it on G&A cos I was pretty much knocked out when my baby was put on me and nearly dropped him! My mum had to catch him!

Hi ladies, Ok so i have a bit more time now so i will tell you about my experience of a water birth and also of the opposite end of the spectrum, a chemically induced hospital managed birth!
My first baby was induced a week early due to high blood pressure, i was scared stiff the entire time and she was born about 20 hrs later, naturally but I did tear. i found the lack of control very hard, everything was done 'to' me and i felt i had no choice. I had several epidural top ups and was pretty sick,in all it wasnt great and I felt very strongly that if I had another baby then i would do it my way, as far as possible anyway. So, five years later I had a trouble free low bp pregnancy and my water broke at home 2 days before my due date. I went to hospital and used a TEns machne and walked the corridors for an hour or so, my hospital has one large birth room with a pool and i was desperate to use it, luckily for me it was empty. I got in and three hours later my boy slipped peacefully into the world with just gas & air and a warm pool. It was fantatsic and I cannot recommend them enough. Everything down below gets very soft in the water so tears etc are usually not a problem, his head came out several seconds before his body and he just slipped out and was placed in my arms without so much as a cry. You cannot use anything but gas & air ( i dont think even pethidine) so you must be prepared for that. I felt very private, my bits and pieces were not on show for all to see and that made me feel far happier, there was also far less intervention and examinations.
HOWEVER, what i would say is that no way could I have done that with my first baby and no 'natural' birth is ever worth risking either mum or baby, if your healthy and all is well go for it, if not you may need to be realistic but safe.
xx

Assuming all is well, I'd love a waterbith! I'm a swimmer and always feel very calmed by water. My local hospital just opened a new maternity ward and they now have 4 birthing pools so hoping that one will be free if I'm given the OK to use it.

It's funny I found out my OH has been doing extra research that he hadn't let on to yet. When I told him my interest in a waterbirth he replied "that's great, but you do realize that you only get air/gas don't you?". I was very impressed.
