Anxiety medication is usually a class of drug called Benzodiazepines and can be harmful to a fetus particularly in the first trimester. There is an increased risk of congenital abnormalities. I do not mean to scare you...but you asked! There are other forms of treatment for anxiety and OCD such as speaking to a therapist, which holds no hazards to your fetus. If you are really worried, try and seek out different types of treatment that do not pose a threat to your baby. Thinking about the risks vs benefits will only make your anxiety worse! This is only my opinion and in no way intended to make you feel guilty or bad about your decisions. After all they are YOUR decisions! Good luck with everything sweetie and again...congratulations!! |
Thanks for your reply. The medication I am on is not a Benzodiazepine...it is an SSRI. Although there are risks with ANY medication, my Psychiatrist and my OB/GYN both agreed that for both mine and the baby's health, I should remain on medication. With SSRIs there are no risks of fetal abnormalities, but there is a small risk of a rare respiratory disorder, but it is so rare that I am not going to focus on it. Trust me...I have been researching my medication for MONTHS!! I even tried to come down off my meds and it was NOT A GOOD thing at all!! I am just going to be as healthy and safe in every other way that I can and trust God with the rest. THANKS!
