Brand New Preggers!

Well first of all...WOW! I can hardly believe that I am pregnant...especially since this was my hubby and I's first month TTC and my first month off the pill....CRAZY!!!

As you can tell by my ticker, I am only about 4 weeks and 4 days along...VERY EXCITED, but definitely nervous and scared too! I have my first doctor's visit with my OB/GYN scheduled for 2 weeks from today.

Is there anyone out there who is pregnant and on medication for anxiety/depression? Per my Psychiatrist and OB/GYN's permission, I decided to stay on my medication due to the severity of my anxiety and OCD. I am very scared!! The small risks vs. benefits of the medication were discussed, but I am just a worry wart in nature and the thought of something going wrong because of medication is TERRIFYING!! Any HELPFUL or ENCOURAGING advice would be very much appreciated!!

Thank you and I look forward to getting to know you ladies in here for the next 12 weeks or so

First of all I want to say CONGRATULATIONS on your BFP! Second... your OBGYN has given you permission to continue taking the medication? I do have a couple questions...is the use of your medication ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY? If not, would it be possible to stay off your medication for at least the first trimester? Anxiety medication is usually a class of drug called Benzodiazepines and can be harmful to a fetus particularly in the first trimester. There is an increased risk of congenital abnormalities. I do not mean to scare you...but you asked! There are other forms of treatment for anxiety and OCD such as speaking to a therapist, which holds no hazards to your fetus. If you are really worried, try and seek out different types of treatment that do not pose a threat to your baby. Thinking about the risks vs benefits will only make your anxiety worse! This is only my opinion and in no way intended to make you feel guilty or bad about your decisions. After all they are YOUR decisions! Good luck with everything sweetie and again...congratulations!!

I can't offer advice about your medication (but if your doc recommends it and thinks it's ok, then I'm sure (s)he knows best?)

Just wanted to say congratulations on your pregnancy

Congratulations!!!

I was on Oxazepam for anxiety attacks. But only took it when I thought was necessary. (breathing) Therapy helped a lot to control the attacks. So for me it wasn't all that serious, so I can't really advice you on that one. Just make sure you communicate well with the specialists!

Thanks for your reply. The medication I am on is not a Benzodiazepine...it is an SSRI. Although there are risks with ANY medication, my Psychiatrist and my OB/GYN both agreed that for both mine and the baby's health, I should remain on medication. With SSRIs there are no risks of fetal abnormalities, but there is a small risk of a rare respiratory disorder, but it is so rare that I am not going to focus on it. Trust me...I have been researching my medication for MONTHS!! I even tried to come down off my meds and it was NOT A GOOD thing at all!! I am just going to be as healthy and safe in every other way that I can and trust God with the rest. THANKS!
