Doctor visit this morning....a little summary

Saw my Gynae this morning. He is an older man (about 70 I am sure!!) but when I first came to this country I was told he was one of the best since he had been doing this for years. I must say he is indeed very thorough and he does not "act" like an old traditional doc...

So the visit....

He sent me for HCG/beta test last Tuesday and follow up 48 hours after. Took them in with me. The first test showed my levels to be 740 and the second on Thursday showed them to be 2305. He was very happpy with that and said it indicated that the pregnancy was intrauterine and not another ectopic. Anyway he still did a scan.

He found the gestational sac. It was empty. He did not seemed perturbed and said that was normal and that at this stage the baby is about a millimeter or smaller and so most likely would not be seen.

He also saw some blood inside the uterus near the sac. He said it is also normal but to take precautions he prescribed some natural progesterone pills for me. I am to insert 2 vaginally every night. He also prescribed some Bromergon or the generic name I think is Bromocriptinum for me since I had high prolactin levels before becoming pregnant. (He had me on Dostinex before so that my levels would be reduced to enable pregnancy) However he said the natural progesterone will help to keep my progesterone levels stable enough to sustain the pregnancy. I think the blood he saw made him do this.

Then he gave me some advice that I should come back in ONE MONTH!!!! (That seems like FOREVER TO ME) He told me if I saw any blood at all or any chocolate coloured/brown blood to come in - otherwise - he said - don't call me!!!

He said I may get cramps and this is all normal and that as long as I do not see any bleeding -I must assume it is okay.

Then he gave me some advice on weight gain and eating habits. He said i should never gain more than 1-2 kilo per month or half kilo per week. And If I start any more weight gain I should come in!

He also sent me to get a couple tests done: Blood group (which a quack like me could not remember!), iron, sugar, urine, TORCH test (test for harmful antibodies), TPHA (Syphillis) and CBC (Blood count). He was also going to send me for Hepatitis etc checks - but since I had jabs 4 months ago before I came here, he cancelled those.

I hate needles so I asked him if it was necessary since I did some 6 months ago. He said he just likes to be thorough and now that I am pregnant that he would hate to know that something is wrong and he missed it because he did not check....

Last advice was: "Slow down, relax and only call me if you see blood!! There are pregnancy forums which can be very helpful to you as well on the internet, join a few and if you see anything you don't understand, send me an email."

Pity he does not know I am already a forum addict!! LOLLOL

I hope anything I said here may be of help to someone....

P.S. He placed 5 weeks on my scan!!! Mmmmmm - we'll see!!

Good that he's so thorough!

My MW/Docs did not even do a pregnancy test, they just said HPT was enough! I was there about 10 minutes maximum.

Glad to hear the appt went well, and that he was so thorough too. I´d rather have too many tests than none at all.

At my appt last week, my Gynacologist took bloods and tested for everything under the sun, even gave me an internal, did a smear and tested for Chlamydia (spelling?), which she said was standard for pregnant women. I´ve gotta go back next week for another scan as she couldn´t see much, but said at 5 weeks that was normal. Fingers crossed we get to see something next week!

A month is a helluva long time to wait though!!! I´m struggling to wait til next week!!!

Oh yes - he did have Chlamydia on the test list tooo!! I guess this is what I prefer with the doctor system outside of the UK. On the NHS - they don't do these tests unless you have a history or they have reason to test. I prefer the preventitive methodology.....

My gyn (first time seeing him today!) presribed me magnesium to help with the cramp/ "period" pains.
I'm also going to be tested for all sorts of things, including HIV. I guess they like to be thorough. Plus if it's private healthcare they'll bill us more! haha.

Glad your appointment went well. And thanks. I have my first appointment on the 5th and was trying to see what most peoples first appointments were like.

Scotchbonnet.. do you mind if I ask where you are living? What country? I am American and live in belgium and find things SOOOO much different. And honestly I was really scared to have a baby outside the US because, well lets face it in america we are a bit brainwashed to think that we have the best medical care. But really I find my medical care SOOOOO much better here. Anyways.. just curious. Good to have good medical care.. even if they are a bit "blunt".
