im currently 5 weeks pregnant (ticker is wrong) and just wondering how soon can i have a scan? at christmas ill be 9 weeks and i thought as its xmas we were gonna tell hubbys parents, i was hoping we could get a pic to put in their xmas card for a suprise.

You only get an early scan if you have cramps/bleeding. Otherwise I think you'll have to wait untill 11/12WK

do i need to see a doctor or a nurse?

If you see a doctor now they'll refere you to a midwife probably around 10WK

so i need to see a doctor. when i phone for an appointment what do i say i need the appointment for.

Just tell them you've taken a pregnancy test and it's positive and they'll sort you out

I had my first US at 8 wks 3dys. It wasn't much to look at, but it was there

i went to see my gp and told him i had a positive pregnancy test and he referred me to the midwife who i saw today. She just asked a few questions and said she would see me again after my dating scan between 9-12weeks

it depends where abouts you are? And if you are hoping NHS or private.
I had my first today, but am lucky to be private and in Switzerland. Speak to your gynaecologist and see if they can bring it early for your Christmas idea. maybe they'll be in the Christmas spirit!..

In the UK you usually get 2 scans. One at approx 12 weeks then one at approx 20 weeks.

I did used to think this wasn't enough. But I think its right. I think people who end up getting scans before 12 weeks seem to go into panic. The truth is there isnt much to see before 12 weeks and not much you can do even if you are suffering from cramps or bleeding. It's pretty common early on anyway.
