contact with ammonia / chickens in early pregnancy - will it hurt my baby???

Hi Ladies,

you may remember my post about carrying heavy things whilst pregnant as i work a few hours a week in our poultry farm. However, since then a couple of people have questioned whether it is actually safe for me to work with chickens full stop!

Does anyone know whether it is ok or not to be around chickens and if they could cause a potential harm to my baby? We're not talking a few hens in the garden - we are talking a few thousand with higher levels of ammonia.

thank you xxx

Hi - a bit different but we've got a couple of chickens in the back garden. Hubby was being ultra protective and did some google based research to try and find out if I should be avoiding them altogether. As far as I'm aware, he didn't find anything, although he has continued to be the one to clean them out (he has done this since we had them anyway).

I guess any chemicals in a non ventilated area should be approached with caution - are your chickens in sheds or outside? Afraid I don't have a categorical answer for you, hope you get one soon x

hi hun,

thank you for your reply. They are in big barns which are ventilated to an extent. I did have a word with the doctor and he said to just be cautious, mainly because the smell would aggravate sickness and it is important to try and keep as much food and fluid in as possible, especially as i am not very big in the first place and have problems with my diet.

just don't know what to do! arghhhhh xxx

Sounds like you should be ok then. I'd maybe try and limit how much time you are spending in there, especially if you start feeling sick. Maybe wear a breathing mask or something as well?
