Help! I've just been diagnosed Hypothyroid

Ok i've been to my GP today, took her a thankyou card for all her help she has given us whilst we were TTC and she gave me a huge hug!

I test results were in from the Fertility specialist, my THS was low and the specialist had requested i start hypothyroid (underactive thyroid) treatment.

so the mid-wife was drafted into my appointment, she needed to see me asap so i could go on referral to a specialist who deals with pregnancies with other conditions (ie thyroid issues as well as stuff like diabetes) and as i can't go to her next friday (easter) she's coming to my house at 9am sunday morning to assess me!

It's almost like nothing was happening, i was told not to go to the GP till after my scan, so i went today and it's like fireworks have all of a sudden gone off and now i'm considered a risky pregnancy. i'm totally numb i'm not sure how i should take this at all.

more the fool me i done a bit of reading and left untreated my hypothyroid can cause all sorts of gestational issues and still birth. though i'm comforted in the knowledge i will get special care has anyone else had the same condition? any advice ladies please?

I have no advice, sorry ... but I would be keen to hear of your progress. Both my mother and brother have underactive thyroids, and my mum was about to suggest I get tested when I found out I was pregnant - I don't see a midwife for a few weeks yet, and I'm going to ask her if she thinks I should be tested in case it's a family trait.

i have an underactive thyroid. All they will do is start you off on thyroxine which will get your thyroid levels back up. It means extra blood tests during your pregnancy but other than that shouldnt cause you any other problems, aslong as you take the medication. x

Thanks Marleysgirl, Do get tested if your concerned, as it can cause developmental problems (from what i've read) no one else in my immediate family has thyroid issues.

i'm in panic mode at the moment.

I really wouldnt panic about it hun. All they can do is make sure your levels are stabilised throughout your pregnancy. I got myself in a panic too last time but all that was different was that i had to see a consultant, other than that the pregnancy and birth were fine. xx

My Mum had Over-active thryroid during her pregnancy with me....from what I can gather that's harder to treat as you have too much hormone rather than too little. She now have under-active (burnt out you see) and she just takes supplements of thyroxine. They are very good at treating throid problems nowadays thanks to all the blood tests that you get.

I'm sure everything will be fine just like lorrilou says.

Thankyou for your help, i've calmed down a bit now.
I see the midwife sunday, i think all her lust for urgency has sent me in a bit of a spin. there was talk of me being referred to the specialist so they can monitor my pregnancy more closely. I just hope it all works out ok.

Hi Littlestar, just spotted your post. How are you doing? Hope docs are reassuring you. My mum has hypothyroidism. I am being really ignorant but pretty sure she had it when she had my sister years ago, but wasn't diagnosed until quite a while afterwards, and her and my sis were both fine. She takes thyroxine now and it controls it pretty well. They just probably want to take extra care of you to make sure all is well, because it is less common, but sure you and baby will both be fine. x

Thanks Lucy-Lu
I guess the main thing that worried me is that i wasn't expecting to see the mid-wife till after my 12 week scan like most others have stated, so the fact that she wanted to see me on an urgent basis sent me in a bit of a frenzy.

i've been in touch with one of my old school friends who has recently qualified as a midwife, she told me there was nothing to worry about the baby will be fine with treatment and my bloods and pregnancy will be closely monitored.

Hey ho as long as i have a healthy baby i'm all for the monitoring stuff! (keeping up positive mental attitude)

Good news

Mine was spotted when I was 15, been treated ever since, and really well the past few years.

It's a bit of a fine line getting so you feel good, but you and the baby will be fine
