Thumbs down

My midwife is no fun

I, like anyone, am dying to have a sonogram to see my little baby. So I ask her today when I could go. She said basically not until 24 weeks. She thinks that if nothing is wrong, then there is no point in having one.

Wow, that is late! Is that normal in the US?

In the UK, the 'normal' scans are about 12 weeks and 20 weeks, more if there are any concerns/issues.

No it is not the norm, but since I am not using a doctor I don't have access to ultrasounds. My regular gyno refuses to see me now that she knows I am using a midwife for my prenatal care. Her nurse was actually quite rude about it on the phone one day. Don't get me wrong, I really like my midwife. But I wanna see the little tadpole!

I'm sorry that you are having trouble with trying to have an ultrasound. I think maybe it's time to look around into another care provider that can help to give you what you want. By the time I'm 24 weeks I will have already had 6 US. Maybe you can interview other providers. I looked into a few until I found one who provided the care that I wanted to get. Good luck hun! I hope you get an ultrasound soon!

That's very strange. They usually do it at 12 weeks so they can see closer to what the real age of that baby is, and also they can tell if there are any heart problems. How is she going to know any of that if she waits until 24 weeks. I would definitely look around.

Tell your OBGYN you decided to use her, and then change your mind again if you want. You can see anyone you want to. That's ridiculous!

I would explain to her that you would like a US a bit earlier than that. I'm assuming that because you are in the USA you are paying for her services, therefore she should listen to your wishes. Many people believe that there are risks associated with having too many ultrasounds, my mum did not have an ultrasound with any of her kids but everything was fine.

Why not compromise with her and have one around 24 weeks and one around 12 weeks (I don't think there's a lot to see before this anyway). Another option would be to have a private scan.

i agree ---in ohio we typically have two one in the first tri---for dating purposes(also how i found out i wasnt as far along as i expected) and then again between 18 and 20 ---i went for the 20-- because then they can check all of the organs and possibly tell u what ur having---

22 weeks now ---had mine at 20 (baby development was about 2 weeks ahead) and then ob today said im measuring 25 weeks --- so who knows sometime mid jan to early feb. ---so hope ur pregnancy goes well --and hey some people dont even get ultrasounds--- at least at 24 weeks u will know what ur having if u want to know and a full check on all of the baby's organs and parts and then there wont be any reason to worry

--ya but sweetie ---even though ur only 7 weeks according to ur ticker--- if u can get one scheduled for like 12+ weeks it would be better cause the baby would be larger and u get a really cool pic--- when i have my 8 week done the baby on the ultrasound pic they gave me was barely the size of my pinkie finger--- but at even 11 weeks the baby was much larger and got a beautiful profile and u could see the details in the face--
