Confused about 1st MW appointments & 1st scan dates

Hi Girls,

I've been reading loads of different posts by people seeing their MW & having scans at 6 or 8 weeks. I was at the doc on Tues and she said that I would have my first appointment with MW at 12 weeks when they would do a scan. I have to admit that I was really disappointed at that wait. I do have an appointment to go back to see my Dr in 3.5 weeks to have a chat and to take blood and BP etc. She said she wanted to see me every month as this is my 1st baby and it is important to answer any questions i might have which was great and made me feel more confident in the care from my GP.

The thing is that there are 3 other preg girls in my work (none know that I am) and ALL of them had earlier scans!! 1 at 4-5 weeks as doc thought she was 9 weeks but turned out to be 4ish weeks (I guess she is now 7 weeks as she told us all before she had her scan), 1 at 4-5 weeks coz she was IVF which is fair enuf (she's having twins in May) and the other at 8 weeks "as normal". They all went to the same hospital as I am going to so I just dont understand why I have to wait til 12 weeks!!

I admit that I am a little jealous as I would like to see the little bean and hear the heartbeat asap but I guess I can live with waiting a little longer. I'm going to get a doppler and try to find the heart beat but I'll leave that til about 9 weeks or so.

I tried to talk my DH into going for a private scan but he thinks that it is a waste of money as we will have a scan at 12 weeks anyway..... MEN!! They dont understand!!

Has anyone else seen inconsistencies like this where they live?

Jx

Did the one at eight weeks know how far along she was? I'm not in the UK, but my first appointment was booked for when I was 10 weeks - no scan mentioned. I was displeased with this and called up the office for info on a dating scan telling them I knew my last period, but wasn't sure how far along I was and that I have had two prior early miscarriages (chemicals). Got offered a 7 week or 8 week scan.

You might want to tell them you are unsure of how far along you are...

Hi Vestirse,

I'm not sure about the one who got the 8 week scan, she can be a fairly scary lady at times, very spiky, so I didn't get into much of a chat with her....... the other 2 girls are much easier to talk to so I guess I have more info on them.

I'm glad you are getting your 8 week scan, i guess that is next week then. Good luck!! You will have to post some pics!! I'm sure you are really excited!! Your previous chemicals must make you nervous so it is good practice to keep a careful eye on you.

I'll try telling them that I'm not sure, I might also lie and say that I am concerned that I had some treatment for a broken bone before I knew I was preg....... I did break a bone in my hand but I didn't take any painkillers and spoke to the radiographer and asked her to treat me like I was pregnant when she was taking the x-ray. The limit of my treatment was a cast and a hand support. And I read up about the effects that x-rays have and unless they are an abdominal scan or you have no shielding given to you then the risk is really really tiny, and it was during my last period..... so I am not really concerned but if it gets me the scan a little earlier then why not.............

Thanks for the advise!!
Jx

There is many reasons, even although i miscarried before i still had to wait 12weeks. However because i bled in each pregnancy i was sent to the early pregnancy unit, and that's why the scans were so early, to check if the pregnancy was viable. Some people get them early because of a previous history. Yet if there's no reason, you're right, it's not fair. Also count yourself lucky your GP is doing blood tests. I still haven't had that!

It isn't fair but I suppose that is life. I'm so happy for the others to have gotten their scans but I really would like one too!! (I sound so spoilt!) My DH and I agreed that we wouldn't tell people until we had a scan and saw that the bean was ok so it is going to be a long and tricky 7 weeks!! I'm practially avoiding people as I dont trust myself not to blab!!

If I have to wait then I will wait but I'm going to try telling them that I am concerned to see if that gets me anywhere.... But given how much more serious your history is compared to mine and they didn't want to give you an early scan until you had the bleeding then I dont see me having much luck.

I had two visits to the docs before my first midwife appointment. One was because i had an implantation bleed, which I had no idea was meant ot happen because its my first pregnancy and 3 days later i went to a and e because of excrutiating back pain - felt like part period pain, part sciatica. Still they wouldnt give me a scan and just reassured me that it was ok as i had no bleeding. Im 12 weeks now and will have my first scan next week at 13 weeks. Im a little nervous about it as i still dont feel like im properly pregnant - ive had no morning sickness, and my midwife and doc havent done anything except check my BP and weight. But i figured, if they have no concerns then neither should I!
If anything its made me all the more secretive - i havent told anyone except for my mum and my OH. That said, im really looking forward to it, that is if everything is ok. I am just loving keeping quiet about it, especially two good friends are pregnant and seemed to spill the beans quite early. That said one is a midwife herself so shes obviously had an early scan, and the others midwife is a long standing family friend. Its all about who you know where im from!
Hope that helps, most importantly, dont get stressed
ash x

if you really really wanted an early scan, you could make a docs appointment and say uve had a bit of spotting, and they might send you for a scan. when i was preg i did that but i was actually having spots of brown blood and my GP sent me for a early scan but i m/c the day b4 the scan.

I have just posted on another thread saying I am amazed at the differences in times when everything happens depending on which region you live in, but I haven't heard of such differences within one hospital!

I had to wait until 12 weeks for my scan with my dd.
The only reason I am getting early scans now is because of previous m/cs.

i am from scotland and i work in a GP practice. The guidlines here are that you dont get a routine 'normal' scan until you around 10-12 weeks. if you are sure of your dates then this is usually always when your first scan will be. if you dont remember you last LMP then they normally get you scanned in a couple of weeks just to check if you are further on etc. If, however, you start to have any pain etc you might get an early scan just to put your mind at rest but another common thing i hear in my work is 'wait and see' which drives me mad if the woman is 6+ weeks as i dont see how a simple ultrasound couldnt be arranged and put your mind at rest. In america though i think they get scans galore! maybe because they all have to pay for their medical treatment and they want their moneys worth! I had around 6 scans but only because i had placenta previa, and i know this time i will probably get an extra one to check if i have this again.
