Question about constipation

Hi everyone,

Sorry to have to ask such an embarrassing question, but I think I've got constipation this evening. I've never had it before - so I'm not sure if it's that or something else....

Is constipation when:

- You don't need to go for days and days but eventually do or

- You do need to go, but can't?

I always thought it was the first one, but since first thing this morning I keep needing the toilet but can't go! I've had to strain and sat in there struggling for ages, but nothing!

Do you think it is just constipation?

Em.

yeah constipation is where you need to go but cant, you usually take laxatives for it but i dont think you can whilst pregnant. Also it is common from what I've read that you get piles whilst pregnant from being constipated from pushing but not being able to go

Hey hun, I too have been struggling with this! Here is what I recommend. Daily fiber supplements(Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber, etc) or you can eat shredded wheat and also lots of fruits.(raspberries are high in fiber!) Fruit also helps provide moisture to the bowel as well and is fairly high in fiber too and helps the bm along. Now its also safe to take senekot daily. My dr has me on that right now too. Matter of fact you can also take milk of magnesia. This morning I was determined to have a bm today so I chowed down a bunch of watermelon(high water content) and took my senekot and my fiber and sure enough this afternoon BM!! And thank god without straining and heavy pushing either. Best of luck to you and I hope it gets better soon!

I'm just as constipated.... and it's not fun! I want to take something - but not too sure. I've been munching on grapes so hopefully that helps!

they are right hon, high fibre foods like lots of fruits and veg and whole grains are the answer - with lots and lots and lots of liquids. You really really need to stay hydrated. And try to do some walking or swimming.

Good luck babe. I hope it gets better! Remember - this is a normal sign of pregnancy

Here's what my doc told me to eat:

-prunes
-grapefruit
-tamarind
-rose petal jam

He also told me to swallow a spoon or two of olive oil.

Good luck

My doctor gave me lactulose for it - I love that man. LOVE. I was weeping with the pain, and being kept awake by backed-up gas for the first two weeks of my pregnancy (karma for the no MS I'm sure), and a nice big dose of lactulose, and then a regular one every day for a week sorted me out nicely. I'm ok without it now, having increased my water intake, but you need to get unblocked first. It's perfectly safe in pregnancy and you can get it over the counter.

I would advise NOT straining. You might give yourself piles, or break a blood vessel in your botty or your cervix, both of which result in SCAREYASHECK SPOTTING. Try leaning forward so that your chest is on your knees while you're trying to pass it, and breathing deeply. I also found a good brisk walk helped get things moving.

Heya,

Phew! I guess that's what it is then - I'm actualy quite relieved (well... erm, not relieved - ok - you know what I meant!!!) that it is nothing more serious! I have a doctors appointment on Friday so I'll still check.

But seriously though - I've never in my life before yesterday had to get off the toilet without going, whilst still needing the toilet!

Emma.
