Important New Medical News - Codeine

There is new evidence that is coming to light in Canada regarding the safety of codeine as a painkiller for breastfeeding mums. Some mothers carry a gene that converts the codeine in common prescription painkillers like Tylenol3 into morphine and can then potentially harm their newborns. It seems to be quite rare, but as we don't know who does and doesn't carry this gene, it might be something to think about when consulting with your doctor for pain meds after birth.
As always, this is is nothing to panic about - just something to be aware of when making health choices.
