I was in slow labour all day but didn't realise, id had a show so knew it wouldn't be long but i had back ache whilst out shopping, i just put it down to being 40 weeks! When my contractions started they were like period pains, alot like the braxton hicks i'd been having, it took 2 hours for them to get a bit more painful then they will step up a gear, and believe me you'll know when that happens! I had to cope with all mine at home with no pain relief and only made it to hospital in time to push, he was born within 7 mins of getting there! You will definately know when they are labour pains, although mine never got regular even right at the end so trust your instincts, i wish i hadn't listened to the midwifes telling me to stay at home when i just knew it wouldn't be long!
xx

Thank you sooo much for all your experiences! I am sure I will be perfectly fine and I'm hoping that, because I am used to pain there then I will hopefully be able to cope a little better. (I have developed a position and breathing technique for just my tummy aches so applying it to labour will be easy)

I am very grateful for your contributions though as it is just good to hear other peoples experiences and know that whatever happens, it will be ok! lol.

It gradualy builds up and although you dont feel pain everywhere the contraction takes over your whole body. My pain was all concentrated in my tummy and i had no pain or pressure down below until i was ready to push (just gas & air i had for pain relief). Its a bizarre pain as you know there is a point o it and its not like an 'ive broke a bone' pain. The beginning and end of a contarction is bearable its the peak of each that you have to decide if you can bear or not. I also found in between each contarction i had no pain at all and was happily chatting away till the next one came and i just breathed well on the gas and air and concentrated on not panicking or letting the pain take over. I was lucky though as my babies were born in 4 hours, 2 hours and 3 1/2 hours. I can honestly say with my 3rd i really enjoyed labour and can remember every bit of it.
What are the peaks like?

I was induced, all of my pain was in my back, it was agonising, i really have not known pain like it so even if i had not been induced i would have known what was going on! I did have some pain in my stomach but because the back pain was so bad i did not really notice it as much!

I know every one will think im crazy but the labor "pains" for me never hurt. I didnt know I was in labor the first time I had a sour tummy feeling but as he was my first I had a habbit of checking my cervix alot just to see when it started to open. I had some on and off waves of feeling like I had to have a bowl movement for about an hour before I felt his feet pushing down . I nearly didnt get to the hospital before he was born breech. only 2 hours total. the next 3 were induced so I knew what the feeling was already. and they all were fast too. But the contractions didnt ever really hurt just not comfy. the pain for me was the actual birth itself being streched like that hurt. but the rest didnt.

My pain felt like really bad gas - all in the lower front of my belly. I didn't know if it was labor or false labor because I never got any BH's and I thought maybe it wasn't the real thing, but the pain got stronger and closer together so I went to the hospital and it turned out to be labor. Once I got to the hospital it really kicked in and it became clear it was labor as the contractions started coming one on top of the other and way stronger than any gas pains I'd ever had. I also had the bowel movement sensation with the contractions. My labor progressed really fast and I had him only 5 hours after getting to the hospital. I didn't get any kind of bloody show or water breaking till after I was at the hospital for a while, so nothing to clue me in that it was the real thing before arriving.

It does seem that the more people who reply the more I realise that everyone who said 'it's diff for everyone' is totally right! More so than I thought, coz I thougt that there might be some similarity bit doesn't appear to be! Lol.

Thank you again ladies for sharing your experiences

My labour was relatively quick - 7 hours, and the contractions (once i knew what they were!) were farily frequent straight away. For me it felt like period pain (i get it pretty bad anyway) but i knew they were contractions because it came and went.
